Seems like Solid fuel is now like Electrics and Gas, you can't "officially" DIY.

On reflection probably a good thing.

Can you show me where it officially says this? As i im trying to learn about this subject.

    It doesnt

We done a self install and the council signed it off. Indeed Hetas have no jurisdiction in Scotland or Northern Ireland

I know, just want to see how they go about unwinding their posts attempting to make the OP look silly.
  • Which council signed it off?

Bolton Council are saying that they cannot sign them off, which is why i'm confused as surely it shouldn't only be HETAS to sign off.

    !!!! council for a !!!! town i suppose...

Every council seems to be different and have varying prices. The one I did for my daughter in Bristol was cheaper than this area. You could try a few private inspectors.

  • No problem then, just find a HETAS-registered installer to fit it and sign it off.
How did you get over 3k thanks

It depends on which BCO you talk to. Taunton Deane charge over £250 to sign off the installation of a wood burner, so most people go down the HETAS route.
Some BCO's feel that they don't have the knowledge to sign them off.

My local BCO wanted ~£300. Once I included the cost of a liner, BCO signing off, and the hassle of climbing up on to the roof, decided it was as cheap to get a HETAS installer in.

It could well be a local thing with the OPs BCO not wanting to get involved. Pretty shoddy on their (the council) part, as they should be able to approve all works that fall under their remit.

I have heard from other people in the trade that more and more LA BCO's are declining the installation of wood burners and sending them to HETAS. Others are charging almost as much as they would for an extension.
Could be they are worried about the house burning down, or someone suffering from CO poisioning.

Carbon monoxide alarms are mandatory for any new installation, so if one isn't fitted withing the correct area, it won't get signed off.
