Could be a cliff face. "Slopes" would normally be contour lines.

OP - the key to 1:25,000 maps is here:

Have you looked at the "slopes" icon on the page you've linked to?

To be fair the vertical face/cliff symbol looks more like what the OP has described, if I'd been trying to describe the slope symbol I'd probably have used a row of exclamation marks.

Yes, I'm aware of it. It doesn't look much like "nnnnn" - unlike that used for cliffs. And slopes are usually depicted with contour lines, every 5-10m
  • This is the symbol for an embankment.

I have just tried to post my photograph with no luck.
What do you mean "no luck"? How were you trying to do it? I don't think we can help much without seeing what you're talking about. You haven't told us what scale of map you're looking at - if it's from your title then probably 1:1250 or 1:2500 rather than the larger scale maps people are referring to above.

I was trying to attach a photograph, but it didn't seem to want me to do that!

I think it must be embankment, so thanks 25 years on! As it is, on the ground, an embankment.

Didn't you notice them when you bought the house?

Yes, I noticed them. I am trying to ascertain whether some trees, which I assumed to be my responsibility, are actually on council land.

So I thought nnnnnnnn might mean trees or hedge. I now know it means embankment, which is what is there, a slope.

So I am still unsure who the trees belong to.

If your boundary is with the public highway and they're in the hedgerow, it's normal for that hedgerow and what grows in it to be your responsibility.

If they're growing in a wider verge, that might be the council's or yours. Does the title plan not shed any light?
No, the title plan says nothing. There are no measurements.

There is a fence along the length of the garden, then the trees and embankment are in front of this. The fence is new though, so ca't really be relied on.

I am unclear whether the row of trees are mine or are included in the embankment and there for council owned.

They don't look like they have been topped for a very long time. They must be over 100 feet tall. There are around 8 of them in a row.

Of course not. The site has rules to protect it. You go to the rules and work out how to do it, just like everyone else who posts pictures does. It's not about luck.

Pictures must be hosted on a picture-hosting site. I use imgBB:
They give you a code and you plonk it in your post.

Then, no more guessing required from other people.
