Only BT offer fibre to address

The checker used to show upto 330Mb on FTTP , that wasn't the theoretical max speed , just the top speed that was available at a wholesale level, it was upto providers if they wanted to retail it, OR/BTw now have made 1Gb available as the best speed on offer to providers and again it's upto them if they want to offer it 'retail' to end users.
The 330 to 1Gb change on the checker is just coincidence that it changed around the same time you ordered FTTP, it would have done that even if you didn't make an order

Perhaps I've misread your post but my checker still comes back with the 330 max speed. Are you saying that OR have upgraded exchanges generally to accept 1GB speeds?

They’ll need to do a bit of work to offer that speed - more fibre cables I guess, or more efficient ways of transmitting data over fibre. Plus improvements at Exchanges and back bones too.

The more people that take up fibre, the slower it’ll get - give that a number of subscribers share each fibre (32 I think).

If everyone uses their broadband at the same time, that’s probably 75Mbps each. 2.4Gbps / 32.
PPI success. Banding success. Double Dip PCN cancelled! South facing solar (Midlands) and battery. Savings Session supporter (is it worth it now!?)

The speed is governed by the Headend equipment in the exchange. And Openreach are upgrading the exchanges with new headend units. My exchange was done a few months back.

OR have a policy of their wholesale networks not being the point of contention in a connection and will provision extra capacity to ensure this. May not happen immediately but it will happen, they are pretty good about it according to someone that would know and I trust (he says they are pretty rubbish at some other things though :rotfl:).

Cheers. Given "Openreach are busy rolling out to 3 million UK premises" and there are over 27 million households (let alone other premises) I'm guessing it'll be a while before it reaches us although given the present prices quoted it would hardly be an issue :(

I feel that prices will come down in the next 3 years or so. Once Sky and other large ISPs start to sell FTTP and the Vodafone 5 million FTTP properties happen, then we will see lower retail pricing due to the number of options.
All technology starts with a high price and comes down as it becomes more widely available and more providers come on-board. I'm not paying much more now than I did 10 years ago on ADSL.
