It's a ruling of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, which covers Scotland, England and Wales as well a NI - and the ruling focuses on the needs of the children, not the (ex) partner, so with any luck...
A was wrong but the ruling only extended the qualification for the award to include partner. Not ex partner who you have been seperate from for 7 years.
There may be a claim on the estate by the mother due to the father financially supporting the children but assuming no will then the children will be the beneficiaries of the estate anyway. but no chance of widows pension0 -

We didn't get any kind of acknowledgement, not even a card. As my children have been attending that school since 1999, I feel let down by them. It's a silly thing to be upset by I know as it makes no practical difference to anything but a card would have been nice.
I thought the children were 8 & 9?
Have you posted on the benefits forum where you'd get more knowledgable peopel about what's available to you ?0 -

Yes his children are 8 and 9. I had children previously with my ex husband. All have attended the same school-so I have known the staff there since 1999.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

Would the children be the legal next of kin? Would that gove the OP the right to apply for any money in bank accounts as their guardian?
Has the death been logged on the "tell us once" service? Do you know of any previous employers he may have had a pension with?Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -

Yes I believe the children would be his next of kin. However I think the bank account will have already been emptied by the woman he was living with. I do know some of his previous employers however one company no longer exists and the other one I know was an agency where he was self employed. In recent years he changed his jobs very very frequently and I suspect didn't think about pensions.
I haven't used this " tell us once" service-I haven't heard of it before actually.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

suspect if the accounts were joint then the NOK bit is not relevant as the account belongs to the other person named on it.
The "tell us once" service is done at the time of registering the death - they can notify DWP pensions and benefits / DVLA / passports etc etc to save you having to tell lots of people0 -

It might be worth checking for bank accounts. If they weren't joint accounts with his girlfriend then legally the money wasn't hers to take, so she might not have emptied them.
I'd also suggest trying the Pension Tracing Service to identify any workplace pensions he may have had. It won't be easy without access to his paperwork though.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
