Never? Has there been something wrong with (for example) the tracking on every car you've owned that has caused uneven tyre wear? If not then you would expect the tyres on the same axle to wear at pretty much the same rate and to need replacing at the same time.

    Punctures and blow-outs.

I have had my Mazda 6 serviced at a main dealer and they say I have a cut in a rear tyre but that I can't change one tyre I have to do both. The good tyre has 5.4 mm left so not worn out so do I need to change both or just one.

Its not a wrong statement, if you are changing to a different type of tyre, winter summer tyre etc.
All tyres have different grip characteristics, but I never change in pairs because I always use summer tyres.
  • Just change the one tyre and preferably at somewhere else that will work out cheaper for a similar tyre.

Some places talk utter cr4p when selling stuff. Costco told me I couldn't just change the front tyres on my car at the time and I had to change the rears as well. Bye bye Costco....
  • I've been to local tyre man this morning he's looked at it and said if I was only doing local it would never need changing but as I do motorway driving best do it but only do one unless I want to give him my money, I'm getting same make be in Monday morning £27 less than main dealer

I have used Costco occasionally but have never been told that. What they have done is always put the new pair on the rear and moved the rear to the front as the ones with least tread are more likely to lose grip first.

I've always gone along with this more due to the fact that front tyres wear quicker on front wheel drives therefore moving the back to the front means they'll never need changing due to their age.

This I understand. The comment from them to me to change all four, I couldn't, hence the good bye. Someone was clearly off target that day.

Changing a tyre with 5.4mm to a new one is no big deal on a standard car. Simply a way to attempt to pull money out of someones pocket.

Thankfully the OP didn't fall for it and has saved some money by going elsewhere :T
