changing tyres

It`s always good to change tyres in pairs.
What`s the spare tyre tread depth?0 -
It’s certainly good for the tyre shop.
I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of miles over 50years, and have never bought a pair. Never a problem.
Never? Has there been something wrong with (for example) the tracking on every car you've owned that has caused uneven tyre wear? If not then you would expect the tyres on the same axle to wear at pretty much the same rate and to need replacing at the same time.0 -
apart from 'specialist' vehicles, including some 4x4's, it's a recommendation only. I'd fit one for now, particularly as the other is still good0

Until the OP gives us more information about their car/tyres etc no one can give a real answer.
Pretty much why I stated it`s "always good" rather than "must" "should" "have to" etc.
For MY car it`s a good idea to keep even wear across axles and a damn good idea to have the same make tyres across all 4 wheels, but that`s my car.
So OP care to fill in the gaps?0 -

It only needs to happen once (for a puncture for example) and they'll always be out of step for wear on that car0 -
I will try to answer some points, the car doesn't have a spare, it's not a 4x4 or rear wheel drive so basically the rear wheels only hold the back end up, because the remaining tyre still has 5.4 mm tread left the difference between new and old will only be maybe 2mm. As others have said I have been driving nearly 40 years and never been told to do this before.0

Take it to an independent tyre place and get them to change the worn tyre. The other one will be fine.
Will almost certainly be cheaper than the dealer anyway.0 -
You could, potentially, theoretically, have an issue with the ABS/ESP getting confused by different rates of rotation of the wheels. But it's massively unlikely for such a trivially small difference in tread depth.0
