If you add up those labour hours, how much would you have made working for an employer?
If you enjoy it and see it as a break from your usual job, then fine.
But financially it makes no sense.
We did it evenings weekends and holidays that's why it took 3 years. No time off work at all. Why would we put value on our own labour? We enjoyed doing it because it was for us. We helped our friends out in the same way so they were paid that way. We didn't lose out on anything just had a beautiful house.
Why doesn't it make sense financially? Saved us an awful lot of money.0 -

I remember being in my 30s, having debt, renting and not imagining I would ever be able to own. But the deposit gradually built up and this year at 45 I bought my bungalow with an 18 year mortgage. Ironically the debt I had in my 30s actually helped me buy as I did a PPI reclaim and used that to bump up my deposit further.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0

1. I met a man 10 years older than me who already owned a flat that he bought back in the days when they were relatively affordable on a normal salary.
2. Before that I lived in a room in a shared house for five years, and didn't own a car. At first it was a necessary situation as I had a very low salary, but after I got a pay rise I saw no real reason to change a lifestyle that was working perfectly well for me, so I just put the entire pay rise into savings0 -

You'll be pleased to see I have changed my signature.
Didn't think it would cause such offence - I think the gold would have been sold whoever was chancellor.
But don't worry, I'm sure the Russians or the Chinese govt will be looking after it very carefully.Selling off the UK's gold reserves at USD 276 per ounce was a really good idea, which I will not citicise in any way.0
