Eh? Solicitors advise their clients on the risks. It's the client's contract. From what we've been told, the OP was happy to accept that they had six months to get a mortgage offer organised. Clients routinely take a view on things.
Given there isn't yet a mortgage offer there doesn't seem to be a lender involved. Why would the lender care about the timing of exchange anyway? They're not committed to anything until completion.
Fair dos! Seems crazy to me solicitors can allow that, but if they're allowed, they're allowed! Can understand them giving warnings re say allowing buyer to move stuff in before completion, or doing works, or building a shed in the garden, but to allow them to make a legal comment to buy the house with no guarantee of funds? Well, you learn something new every day... thanks!

Solicitors are no different to any other professional: they provide expert advice and services to their clients.
But at the end of the day they do whatever their client instructs them to do (provided it is within the law).

This comes back to the whole "It's not my fault someone told me to do it" scenario. Why do so many people these days not take personal responsibility for their own decisions? PPI 'miss-selling' is a classic example. I mean, if you choose to take out insurance you don't need why is that someone else's fault? Surely before you buy something (whether insurance, a toaster, a house, whatever) you should make sure it is what you actually want and need? Not rely on 'them' to tell you?
