Well made - well regarded and within budget

If it was me I would plump for the 4GB "upgrade" and spend £25 squid on an SSD

    Still well within budget

That setup will be worlds apart from anything with a N processor, crap screen plasticky bottom end consumer crap

    It's a Core2 Duo P8600. It's 10 years old.

Actually it is slower than the N4200: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

    Still...a bit old.
Encore PC have some devices a little less old for around the same price. Example; https://www.encore-pc.co.uk/lenovo-thinkpad-t430-i3-3120m-2-50ghz Grade B @ £138. Add another £22 for a solid state drive.
I would look at Grade B upwards.

Just an example as opposed to a recommendation.

    Hi,

do you want update with what you've decided, or wait until the argument is over?

Have you found a lappy that you like?

    It's only been six hours....give them a break. :)

    There is no argument.
I don't know what has occurred in our society wherein a harmless discussion is deemed an argument.

People have their opinions are they are entitled to express them and others are entitled to agree or disagree.
On a technical forum, you need analysis and hopefully, a range of expertise.

I would be happy to have intelligent discussion on any request that I post, rather than have to wade through different opinions where there is no analysis whatsoever, having to work it all out for myself.

The OP asked about a second hand laptop and someone suggested that it was better to buy a new 'plasticky' laptop outside their budget.
People are going to disagree. It's nothing personal.

    "Worst advice ever"
"you don't think things through before posting"
"A link to the laptop would have been less wordy"
"What were you thinking? Did arciere recommend the Vivibook deal to you?"
    "your opinion is nonsense"
"the kind of person who would scare them into paying £6 extra a month too.
    Terrible."
"I hope it wasn't arciere who advised you"
"Should you really be advising on a technical forum?"
    "posting scaremongering nonsense"

People are going to disagree, but they should do it more politely and with less arrogance.
If that was not personal, I can't imagine how personal discussions would be.
Anyway, I'm not going to post my CV here, if that's what you are looking for.

No...it's not personal. I don't know you, so I can only comment on what you write.

I may not agree with what you write here, but I have nothing against you at all.

On another thread we might be in total agreement. There is absolutely no ill feeling towards you at all.

All debate is for the benefit of the person asking for advice.

Get it now? Don't take it personally.

Oh no don't worry, I know that was you.
Just for the record, advising to buy a 10-year old laptop is not a great advice either ;)
But that's enough from me, no more OT.

arciere...don't take it all out of context. You recommended buying a new laptop, without recommending a particular model. When pushed, you stated a Vivibook, without pointing to a particular model.
When pushed, you pointed towards a particular retailer, but still no laptop.
So with all of those clues, it appeared that you were referring to a £260 ASUS Vivobook with a Pentium N4200 CPU.
Why did it take so long to get to that point??
We are trying to help the OP to the best of our knowledge, not to make the search more complicated.

When another poster pointed out they bought a Vivobook, it's clear that I was just teasing when I asked if you had advised them to do so. :)

But getting back to the topic, the CPU and graphics will have an effect on performance, even web surfing, contrary to your assertion.

A solid state drive will have a significant positive effect on performance, even with just web surfing and YouTube, contrary to your assertion.

A refurbished machine can be 'as new' with no signs of usage, contrary to your assertion.

This and more is why I am concerned about the advice you are imparting.
Your CV is not necessary.. You are judged on the quality of your work here and now.

Again, nothing against you personally. If you asked for advice, I would also do my best for you.
