And that's what emergency dependants' leave is for, but it's intended to allow parents find someone else to do the caring (or offspring, if adult children have caring responsibilities for aged parents or others).

Yes that's what I said in an earlier post, but I get the impression some people think they shouldn't be missing work at all!

@motorguy I didnt think that classified as a sick day if your kid was ill? That’s a whole different story and people should be allowed to take unpaid days of.

So a child becomes ill in the night, needs to be cared for, too young to be left alone, do you think its realistic that a parent should have a carer lined up for them in time to be at work for 8 or 9am?

They are going to need some time off, it can't be helped!

Use annual leave, unpaid leave, arrange to maybe come in late whilst you organise leave?

Ringing in sick because your child is sick. Laughable.

If you've made the decision to have children, make sure you have the support structure in place to look after it, dont make it everyone elses problem at work.

I've seen people do it - phone in sick because their child was sick!

    I've seen it loads actually.

Should be annual leave, or unpaid leave, or come in late and work the time up.

Some will say they need to take a sick day because they're child is sick (if they think their manager condones that), or they'll use the "my child was up sick last night so i'm too tired to come to work so i need to take a sick day", or "my child isnt well so i'm stressed, therefore i need to take a sick day".

I know of one woman who got a long term sick line from her doctor for stress, because her child was (long term) sick and then was up in arms when it was suggested that she might return to work played the "how do you expect me to return to work when i cant leave my sick child?" card. Was getting full pay when off sick of course. When she finally returned to work she was actually angry with her employers for even having suggested this. Quite happy to take full pay though....
  • A work colleague of mine came in with pneumonia, he was coughing sweating and so ill he couldn't go out on appointments. He wouldn't go home as he didn't get paid. I caught if off of him and was quite poorly, but my husband caught if off me and was really ill and one of his lungs has never been the same since. It's his weak spot now and he suffers every winter. So I think it's quite inappropriate to go in.

With respect, big difference between the sniffles or a common cold and pneumonia.
  • Yes I agree he should have never left his bed. Also when people come in with a sickness bug, awful!

I think the reality is, if someone is genuinely not fit for work, they shouldnt be there. The guy should have been sent home.
