Love the passive aggressive nature in the post. Most people understand chronic disabilities rather than contagious viruses.

Really? So why did you lie to your employer about all the conditions you have if they understand them?

If I'm too ill to leave the house or I'm contagious I'll work from home, although I respect not everyone can do this. I'll only take sick days if I'm too ill to function. However I've only taken a handful of sick days during my employment so if I'm sick my employer knows I'm genuinely sick and that goes a long way. Some people almost take a sick day for a broken nail.
  • OP are you ill? Judging by the thread title you are not coherent.

if im off sick i dont get paid.. so sorry if my cough annoys you but im not losing out because you dont like the sound of coughing.

If you have the issue, you could use your sick day or holiday instead..

Same here. No sick pay, havent needed a day off sick in 4 years....

My colleagues who do get full sick pay - off sick because of toothache, common colds, because their children are sick, etc, etc.

I do this too - although if I'm too ill to leave the house then I'm possibly not up to much work!

I do find that my work quality goes way down even with "just" a cold though. I try to do work that doesn't need as high a level of thinking when I'm feeling under the weather - nothing worse than spending ages unpicking bugs from mistakes you wouldn't have made if you were well.

Although we never did that, I do agree. I know both individuals and unions who used them as alternative holidays. The problem is, like everything, how do you find the right compromise? It's like employment tribunals themselves. I was always opposed to the fees that were introduced. But I am equally not in favour of free and unfettered access because too many people claim purely because they can, to see if they can get some money in an economic settlement. We see people here telling people to do just that when they have no case! It is far from being just the unions. Employees have bad eggs, so do employers. Just take a look on this board in a typical week - make a claim because they'll settle to save legal costs; you don't have to work your notice if you decide not to because they can't do a thing about it; if you want to have a day off for an interview, pull a sickie......

I remember when my dad was a postman in the days of the GPO and he was one of the rare people who didn't "take a Whitley" when their annual leave ran out.

I have full sick pay. It does not encourage me to be off sick. I have returned to work after three months sick leave this week. During that three months sick leave a never worked less than 15 hours a week. I am now on a phased return, and must not work more than 20 hours a week - which I finished sometime yesterday, but have got in from work just now...

Full sick pay does not encourage sick leave any more than SSP does. Honest people don't lie. Whatever the rate of pay.

Let’s not be under any illusion that some business have their staff in work but gossiping and on the Internet for a percentage, that affecting productivity.
Well it appears that your business has at least one! Lucky for you that they appear to tolerate it. At least until they catch you, that is.
