    @lilevlis the masks work for 15 minutes and ironically they are the ones always using hand want (almost obsessively imo). I don’t get colds often but I do need a day in bed chilling.

    @messedup having a chronic illness is a lot different than having a cold.

    @keepcalm I need to find my sickness policy but they will pay up to six months full pay sickness for cancer. I’m in a small department and they’ve worked there many decades so being sacked isn’t an issue.

    Common cold, well I wouldn't stay off for one, I admit.

    Children who are sick have to be cared for, what do you expect parents to do when they get that call from the school/nursery etc?

    I certainly don't think parents should take sick leave if their children are sick. I think they should take annual leave or unpaid leave.

    But inflammatory is what every one of your posts is about. That's why you start them. I very much doubt "you" exist, because everything you say is designed to play into an inflammatory stereotype.     Oh it could be yes, but the incident in question was because the person had toothache, got a dental appointment first thing for a temp filling and then took the rest of the day off sick.

    I expect people who have children to make provision for their children when they are sick and / or use annual leave when necessary and not take sick days themselves when they're not sick but their children are.

    Not unreasonable, surely?

    Indeed. In fact it could / should be a disciplinary matter if they do!

    There is a legal right to "short" periods of unpaid leave in the event of an emergency situation with a person who reasonably relies on you for their care (generally a child but could be another relative or even a friend if you are their primary carer). However it should be understood that "short" generally means time to arrange care, not time to do the caring yourself.

    Frankly laughable that some parents think its ok to ring in "sick" because a child is sick.

    I think its called 'emergency leave for dependents' these days.

    Its still time off though, and that's what seemed to annoy the poster, not what it was classed as!

    They can and should offer to take unpaid time off as is their right. If they phone in sick they will either receive full pay or start the qualifying period for SSP under false pretences

    And that's what emergency dependants' leave is for, but it's intended to allow parents find someone else to do the caring (or offspring, if adult children have caring responsibilities for aged parents or others).
