Proposed switch from BT to Plusnet.

Options
After reading the latest MSE report on BB Best Deals, I am considering switching from my £55 a month BB (non-fibre) and Anytime Calls + Bt Sport App. to Plusnet who quoted £32 for what seems to be the same service.
There are a couple of points on which I am not too clear, so perhaps more experienced members can help.
My 12-month contract with BT expires on the 12th October. I see from the Forum that there will be penalties involved for leaving BT. What are the tactics involved to properly time a switch over to avoid paying too much? When would be the best time to sign with the new provider and alert BT that I am leaving?
When I phoned Plusnet today, I was told there would be no problem with viewing (using a Chromecast) and the BT Sport App. Yet, I saw on a website that to view BT Sport on Plusnet you had to have a Sky box? Can someone confirm one way or the other?
Thanks for any help.

  • As a Plusnet customer, I would avoid Plusnet for a while.
    Why?
They have just introduced a new billing system which isn't working well. It is doing small things like charging people twice! And the customer services are unable to cope with the flood of support calls and refund customers quickly.
Just look at the billing threads at https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Account-Billing/bd-p/AccountBilling

Also the BT Sports app from Plusnet is having issues and will not let you purchase it currently.

Given how things are, I wouldn't move to Plusnet nor alter anything on my account until the billing system is fixed. It is now 20 days since they put it live, and still bills are being issued incorrectly.

Agree with gsmlnx having moved from BT to back to PN less than three weeks ago.

Still awaiting a refund for a second LRS payment they took.

Regarding BT Sport you can view it with a subscription on a Youview box or a Sky box and / or a Chromecast depending on which subscription you choose. I have a Youview+ box as I wish to record and view BT Sport etc, and I can also view it on Chromecast.
  • IF you can sign up to BT Sports app. with Plusnet, I can confirm that it works fine casting from tablet to TV via Chromecast
  • Now the dust has settled............

I signed up with Plusnet and the process swung into gear. They were extremely efficient with sending me email after email alerting me when the various changes would take place.........including the change of my telephone number - which I didn't want to happen!

A few days later, I started getting letters from BT asking me to phone them, which I duly did.

I told the chap I was leaving as their charges were continually creeping up to a point where they were challenging my loyalty of over 50 years.
Although I told him that I had already signed up with Plusnet, he put me on hold and then came back with exactly the same prices as Plusnet for the same services.......a saving of £306 a year over the price that BT were going to charge when my contract expired this month.

I phoned Plusnet the next day and cancelled my order under the 14-day cooling-off clause.
