Linux, which one?

I've just got a cheap laptop and want to install Linux on it, but which one.

I want to use the laptop for office applications and browsing the internet, and of course Championship Manager.

But which one do I choose.

The laptop has a 1.1ghx cpu, 20Ghz HDD, and 512Mb RAM.

    Hi
As ormus has suggested, Ubuntu is probably the one to go for.
It's the one that I use.

But I don't know whether Championship Manager will run on Linux.
Maybe someone else here may have tried it.

I'm not too keen on Ubuntu (though most others seem to like it). Zenwalk Linux is much better (in my opinion) - it's fast and easy to install/use. It's great if you want a relatively simple installation to get your head round and learn about before you start customising it to your liking.

Or Mint which is based on Ubuntu. I've tried about 10 different distros recently but gone back.

    Your not wrong - 695MB !!
  • Ubuntu couldn't get my wireless networking card to work:mad:

However 'pretty' it might be, if it doesn't work.....

However, you could try PCLInux (have a look at http://www.pclinuxos.com/) which did work 'out of the box'. As it's a live CD you can check for compatability for jumping.

Gentoo also worked for me! (http://www.gentoo.org/)

You do realise Championship Manager will only run on Linux using a Windows Emulator like Wine? Even that isn't guaranteed to work.

It is definitely worth the download. I had feisty fox (7.04 I think from these people and have just updated it online to gutsy gibbon (7.10)
previously I had dapper drake (6.??)which could not see the new lcd monitor.
gutsy gibbon can read the NTFS drive that has windows on as well as its own linux file system:)
If you dont mind waiting around a month you can order a free CD
    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/
same address as above but there is an option to have it delivered by post.
Nice to have as a back up disc anyway.
If you have a bittorrent client you can download it here http://torrent.ubuntu.com/simple/gutsy/desktop/ by downloading the 27k file and then telling your torrent client to download the full version. This is better really as it can be broken off and resumed whenever you like.

It very much depends on the laptop. While the choice of what distro to use on a desktop might be fairly obvious, laptops are different.

Have a look here to see what others have had success with.
