Usual advice given here is to consult a comparison site.

    Have you tried that?

I don't know. Which comparison site did you use?
What info did you input? Consumption, location, etc?

The 'all you can eat' for £x tariff:T

As an ex BG customer I got the personalised invitation to rejoin the company. Page after page, if you attempt to read all the conditions; but it tells you nothing about tariff price. - which must be the basis of their offer.

There must be a huge temptation for anyone who joins the scheme - to turn up the heating, and be less concerned about electricity use, if you pay no more for up to 50% more consumption.
  • I remember the old Powergen (now E.on ) tariff years ago which started off as an EU subsidised tariff for OAPs .Price was based on how many bedrooms. Doomed to failure . My Mum was on it, she never switched the heating off 24 hrs a day in winter lol. She used a massive amount of kwhs like all the others. Powergen then tiered it according to usage then Eon took over and scrapped it.
BG would nt be stupid in bringing back this daft idea.
They still have the free 8 hrs weekend tariff for smart meters for standard variable tariff customers which is nt a good deal at all.

It was called 'Staywarm' and the maximum number of bedrooms was three.

As you say it was abused in all manner of ways. There was no check on the number of bedrooms.

The BG system will be similarly abused in the declaration of previous consumption - what will new occupants declare? If BG accept xxxkWh consumption as the basis of the direct debit, it is a racing certainty that this consumption will be exceeded by many.

Given, in time, BG will catch up, but it will be easy to fudge meter readings to delay detection. Cannabis growers won't even need to bypass their meters.
  • I fall outside their usage. It appears that my usage is too low. If I entered a higher usage, I got a quote of £100 pm, £50 for each.

Have to admit, for a 3/4 bedroom house, it could be quite appealing.

Although I did see a recent thread on the parking ticket board about some nonsence.
Shame you only got one bite that time, eh, after all the time and effort you put in.

Still you did better this time.
Shame you found it difficult to tell us your location. It's always the difficult questions like that trouble MSEers isn't it?

But just to clarify a few points:

    1. Be especially wary of any comparison site that makes a recommendation. ;)
What are they recommeding based on? A huge kick back? Bulb Energy have a well known reputation on these boards for the bribes they pay/ponzi scheme.
Some refer to them as Spam Energy, and for obvious good resaons.

    2. Comparison sites should simply present details of suppliers and tariffs available to you based on price.

    3. Using Milton Keynes as a possible location (since that is alledgedly where your father in law received his parking ticket) I see that one could save almost £200pa compared to Bulb Energy for a dual fuel switch.
(Even with their Ponzi scheme, that is still unattractive)

    4. You could save even more if you went to single suppliers.

    5. This savings do not include the price rise coming in November as pubicised by Bulb Energy (who only offer variable tariffs)

    6. You won't find the BG Unlimited tariff on any comparison site, if for no other reason than your own usage does not make you eligible for that particular tariff (but you probably knew that too)

Another one for this list, fellow MSEers!

Calculate your annual/quarterly/monthly cost on old current & new tariff.

Simple to create spreadsheet to calculate cost for number of tariffs.

Your tariff is based on last years use, and I don't find BGas cheap now. I got a quote for unlimited and it was £5pm more than their "fixed" BGas tariff on MSE CEC. So in itself might not be too bad an option if you would have gone for the BG anyway, however the fact that BGas is 50% more expensive than my current supplier would means it would be no good even if I left every source of heating on 24/7
