The thud i heard was the sound of my gear box dropping all its load on the road.
And the light that came on was something to do with the electrics. When put on diagnosis it was the brake switch?? But when the gear box was fixed, that light went off and i didnt have a problem with the brakes lights.
That doesn't add up.Gearbox & brakes are not connected.0 -
Yeah I didn't think they were connected but here's what happened...
Was returning from taking my daughter to school. Was at a cross roads waiting to go straight ahead. Set off and when I got across onto the road ahead I heard a thud or should I say more of a clunk (felt more like a thud from inside the car) and immediately the ECU light or whatever it's called, came up on the dash. I had to keep going as I was in busy fairly fast moving traffic. The car wasn't playing up although it was a bit sluggish. Our mechanic is on route so I called in on the way. Upon getting out of the car, I and the mechanic who was stood outside at this point, noticed a trail of fluid.
He got it straight up on the ramps and you could see wet patch under the car near ish the front on the drivers side but closer to the middle. A seal had gone, allowing all the fluid out of the gear box to be dropped. Told him about the light on the dash coming on as soon as I heard the thud/clunk and he put it on the diagnostics. Came back as brake light switch. Booked car in for both doing the day after. He was a bit baffled too. Anyway he did the seal first and had to replace every drop of fluid in gear box. Said I'm lucky it didn't smash gear box to bits. As soon as he did it, the dash light went off! So didn't need it doing in end and it never came back on!0 -
Don't get upset and don't take any heed of people who have no buisiness making you feel inferior
Tiny budgets are fine
I've been given cars for free from mates, (MOT failures/too old etc etc), bought them from the scrappy for £50, bought cars that old and unfashionable that no one else is interested; and I've done just fine over the years.
Never even nearly got close to spending £2K.
If you're going to fish in this end of the pond though, you do need to to know what you are looking for/at or take a friend along that does. (a friendly mechanic for beer money perhaps?)
Gumtree is my favourite place for bargain motors.
Loads of good advice in the posts above; persevere and you will find you get the hang of it, (you already are at an advantage to most people by now knowing ultra low mileage is a bad rather than good thing).
Onwards and upwards.....
I'm super stressed at the minute and feels like I'm trawling the Internet constantly😕
Insurers have said I've got 14 days to add new car to my policy before its cancelled and if that's the case I will incur daft fees.
I do love gumtree too though. I'm just trying to find something that ticks all the boxes that's not a million miles away. I don't mind travelling but were limited to time due to school runs etc0 -
No bother
One thing I always ask when buying a car is "what is the reason you are selling it".
Quite often this can be a "good" reason, person may be the type that feels he needs a "new" or "better" car than the one he is selling despite it being perfectly fine.
Another "good" reason could be something is wrong with it but either doesn't bother you, (eg some gadget not working), or is something you, (or your beer money friend) are confident of fixing.
Of course very many cars for sale are for sale for "bad"reasons; hefty repair bill on the horizon, unfixable fault etc, etc, and sussing out if someone is concealing a "bad" reason for selling is part of the equation!
It's about assessing the seller as much as the car sometimes.
Plenty used cars out there, if you get a bad vibe walk away.
Good luck.0 -

I’ve found another lovely car and mot history is fantastic but it’s a bloody cat c! Pfffft! Every time I find a nice 1 there’s always something lurking. Some people say don’t buy cat c vehicles, some say do but I’m not wanting another problem0 -
Cat C isn't a problem if repaired properly, but you'd want to take it for a professional inspection and ideally see the damage and receipts for repair work. A car worth £3000, say, can be written off for pretty trivial reasons because the cost of parts Labour and courtesy car are all very high.0

My husband wants to make me a gift and told me to pass on the right and chose a car. In General, I got the right, and with the car there are difficulties, or rather with the choice. I like datsun go plus, I think it's a good option for a woman and the price is acceptable. Standard equipment will be enough for me. What say you?
Given that Datsun ceased to exist as a brand in the UK 34 years ago I think your post is at best unhelpful, and at worst spam of some sort. And rather offensive to say "it's a good option for a woman".0 -

Its an 05 plate micra.
Mileage is ok. (Not too low, not too high-think its like 98k)
Mot history is absolutely fantastic. Wish i could include a link but not sure how to do it.
Cars bang on my budget too 😞0 -
