Hi can anybody help !! Last week I recived a letter from Barclays saying I had ppi on a Barclays account and they have refunded me £450 and today Barclay card rang me and told me I’ve had ppi on a Barclay card from 2002 and still using to this day ! The problem I have is I asked Barclays a year ago if I had ppi on any products and they came back to me and said No so why are they contacting me a year later now saying I’ve had ppi obviously I’ve never wanted these products as I’ve always been self employed??

Because they think you had PPI.
Self employment is nothing to do with anything0 -

actually it could be something to do with it.
Barclays as other lenders do conduct proactive remediation on pots of cases which meet certain criteria. i.e if they fall in certain dates, or were closed because of certain reasons. basically processes change over the years and to mitigate this they look back at old pots of cases.
or it could be, they've remediated no PPI pots, and discovered yours was one that was previously rejected by mistake.
I work in Barclays PPI so know this to be fact - it's probably the latter because reject pots are the most common that undergo proactive remediation0 -

Maybe they didnt see it before.
Maybe you have it but are not paying anything (i.e. its on the credit card but you pay the card in full each month. So, no actual premium is being paid)
Barclays have been putting old data back on systems. So, they are finding things that were not previously able to be found.
Sometime the staff dealing with PPI complaints make mistakes and when trends are found, they go back and look at more of their cases to make sure the mistakes were not widespread.I’ve never wanted these products as I’ve always been self employed??
So, why did you pay it? It is important you control your finances. What other things have you paid or are paying that you dont know about?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Ok thankyou it’s just baffles me that 12months ago when I done a ppi check they said I had nothing now they are actually telling me I have ppi policy’s one that is 16 years old ??0

You said it was a credit card.
An PPI on a credit card appears as a separate charge [ if you don't pay the outstanding debt on it every month.] Did you notice this charge?Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
I’ve always declined ppi as I’ve always been self employed and was always told by my old boss that it’s not worth the paper it’s written on !!!0

Be honest I’ve never checked but told I never had ppi ??0

You need to start checking what you are paying. How many transactions are going through that you did not authorise? (I have had 3 in the last 5 years).
Start your complaint by all means but also improve your money control as not knowing what you are paying is never a good idea.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I haven’t made a complaint to them Barclay card have contacted me over the phone just to verify my employment status when this card was taken out and the chap on the end of the phone is adamant that I’ve been paying ppi for 16 years !!0

Another thing to know with Barclaycard applications from back in the day and I’ve seen plenty of these. You can argue until you’re blue in the face that you said no to ppi but if this was a paper application for example after you’ve done your bit the associate upselling would have ticked the box. This was common practice back in the day. But your self employed status (if also stated as self employed on the application will go in your favour)0
