There's always the possibility that the problem lies with the base rather than the mattress.

I'd agree with this, we bought a brand new mattress earlier this year but kept our existing divan base and we are now looking to replace the base because of the creaking noises every time we move. It sounds like the noise is coming from the springs but when we removed the mattress thinking it was faulty we realised it was the now almost 10 year old base.

So now what do I do? And what are my options?

Well you've now got a report stating it isn't a manufacturing fault. So you have two options. First, if you're confident its a manufacturing fault is to get your own independent report conducted. You'll be looking at around £70ish to get this done but it'll be refunded if found to be an inherent fault. Second option is to buy a new mattress.
  • The bed is an oak bed with slots. It’s not on a divan and the bed is completely solid eg no lose slots etc.

And as for the manufacturing fault, what else could it be? Is it standard for a mattress to not last longer than a year? When I had it stripped today I took a photograph of the mattress. There is two visible dents at each side and then a big bump in the middle which obviously doesn’t get slept on as much. And one side is visibly worse than the other even though the bed is rotated. Then the noises of the springs. The bed was fine and then over the past couple of months it’s just gotten worse
  • Are you, um, overweight?
  • Lol no. And neither is the missus.

    Or the OPs back.
  • Lol no. And neither is the missus.
    Combined?....:o
  • so what is faulty the mattress or the bed?
I purchased a silent night mattress
I have had the bed just over a year and my back pain is returning due to the mattress no longer feeling supportive
it’s clear that something is wrong with the bed

    was it expensive?
  • How much was the mattress ??

I don't want to sound harsh, but you can't in any way hold a mattress responsible for curing your bad back.

It might be that your back has got worse, or you aren't applying correct posture in the daytime.

Neither can you expect a mattress salesman to diagnose your health needs.
