Most, if not all, car hire places will try to upsell an excess waiver, so a zero excess is pretty common.

This is true but I have to point out again that I didn't choose to rent a vehicle at any point. I took my perfectly working car to have a routine service and the dealership broke it so badly that it couldn't leave the workshop for 9 weeks.

It was the least they could do to give me a replacement vehicle while they fixed mine. Normally they would have given me a Land Rover from the showroom but in this instance they said they were low on stock due to it being a 'changeover' month.

Giving zero excess insurance on these loan vehicles has been standard in my experiences.

I've never known a main dealer do a no excess on a courtesy car. Mercedes certainly did as did BMW and Audi in my experience. Have had to sign for it and offered a fixed fee excess waiver which I did not pay for.

    You didn't rent it.

    Which they did. Free!

And you showed your gratitude by causing a grand of damage to it.

Bulk buying (after the OP has rented a few times)

    Trade Discounts etc

I doubt Thrifty bulk buys wheels or has any trade discount with BMW. IMHO, it seems very unlikely they would get those wheels at £300 each.

Yes sorry was unclear - all three specified an excess payment to be made in the event of an incident.

Do you think they pay full list price for their vehicles?
  • Why is this clown (OP) arguing? You are responsible for the damage, at least act like a responsible and decent human being and pay up! (#cheapskate)

This. I do a lot of miles in my job so always get a courtesy car if mines in the shop for service, repair, whatever. The Kia garage that looks after my Sportage has a 1K excess on all courtesy cars insurance policy.....
