How do I use my LCD TV as a PC Monitor?

We bought a Samsung TV on Thursday from Richer Sounds and asked for one which would allow us to use it as a PC monitor.. bought a cable (a big 3 meter very thick jobbie) to connect the two and off we went.. after 3 hours of trying to get the PC and the TV to communicate we gave up and phoned the shop to be told that the Samsung won't actually do it, that the salesman had been wrong to say it does  so we took the bloody thing off the bracket and drove back to the shop and they replaced it for a Sharp (LC-32WD1E) which incidentally is a FAR BETTER picture than the Samsung :j

Spent loads of time trying to get them to communicate and absolutely nowt

Just switched the PC on about half an hour ago (TV was already on) and up pops windows XP on the screen as what was on the PC monitor!! hurrah!! then it dissapeared never to be found again! I have flicked through all the channels (EXT1 - EXT7 and 0-99) and cannot find it.

Anyone with any ideas?

Have you tried changing the resolution on the PC? Possibly too high for the LCD TV.

Can you change the input source to VGA from your remote? That's how I have my Tevion set up.

I have looked at the remote and cannot see this option anywhere.

On the desktop, Right click, Properties then Settings tab - Screen resolution.

If your resolution is OK as espresso suggests, there should also be an option on your remote to switch input between devices. My remote switches input from Scart1 to Scart2, VGA, Tuner, AV and YPBPR. Of course yours is different but I would assume has something similar???

I just looked at the specs here: http://www.twenga.co.uk/specs-LC-32WD1E-SHARP-LCD-TV-127423
Your graphics card should be set at 1366 x 768 and you should connect to the TV via a standard PC to Monitor cable - VGA (HD-15), or can use HDMI if your graphics card supports it.

some lcd tvs have limited pc compatability. you must use 60hz vesa, or it wont work.
make sure you have the correct cable for your puter, there are 2 types. rgb/rgb and rgb/dvi conversion cable.
    Get some gorm.

Thanks - I just read the box and the cable is definately an HD15 so at least I know I'm on the right track! when you say graphics card should be at 1366 x 768, do you mean the screen resolution as previously mentioned? or is this card something I should have as a seperate thing? (I know - I am seriously un-technical).
