Can't log in to my Home Hub 5!

If you open a command prompt on a wireless laptop and type the following:
tracert 192.168.0.1
what do you get?
OK, from a W7 WiFi machine I get
tracing a route to routerlogin.net [192.168.0.1]
1 6ms 4ms 4ms routerlogin.net
Trace complete
I have got to pop out for an hour or so but would be very grateful for any further suggestions.

Surely you just need to specify the IP/MAC addresses of the BT Hub in the Virgin router settings...?
You may need to let the BT router pick up any IP withe the Virgin router's DHCP (so that the device appears in the settings), then tell the Virgin router to use 192.168.0.254 for that device... and then re-enter that IP on the BT router.
The ARP table on the Virgin router will register that 'Device with IP address XYZ is on port X' and will send all the requests for the BT Hub to that port.
If the BT Hub address has an IP address which is on a different network (i.e. 192.168.1.1), the Virgin will not try to locate that device, as it's not within its network, and it will send the request to its gateway (Internet), which will obviously fail.0 -

a) run an IP scan using the program I mentioned earlier to try and locate the BT Hub;
b) if that fails, change your IP address (your laptop) to something like 192.168.1.99 subnet 255.255.255.0 and see if you can access the Hub from there. Note that you will not be able to see any other device or internet connection0 -

But I can't access the BT HH5 even if I connect a laptop directly to it with everything else in the house turned off! That is the crazy problem!

Yes, they don't have WLAN sockets.0 -
Ok, in that case what I would do, I would:
a) run an IP scan using the program I mentioned earlier to try and locate the BT Hub;

For those reading this a much simpler solution is to use powerline ethernet adapters. TPLink do some where the slaves can also be used as wifi hotspots so you plug the master in near the router, run a network cable to the router, plug slaves in various wall sockets around the house as needed and configure their wifi as required and connect to those.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. For those reading this a much simpler solution is to use powerline ethernet adapters. WiFi is also much more powerful and reliable if it comes from a proper access point or router rather than a Powerline device.0
