This all happened very quickly though. I have the hearing tomorrow. I'm going to attend an AA meeting tonight and I'll try and bring evidence with me that I've been there. I am committed, I do want to turn my life around. I've just been in shock the past day or so.

I actually went to get them in August and I can prove that because the date on them says 16 Aug, and i was planning on giving up drinking then and I took one of the pills but the side effects were so bad that I decided back then to wait until my week off in September so that I can go through the side effects then without having to worry about going into work. The side effects only last a week. Should I tell them this??
But you haven't done anything with them for a month... You ar enow suspended - and yet you haven't started taking them

I would go along with Comms69's advice frankly.

Having been on anti-depressants for anxiety myself you are going about it all wrong.

If the side effects after one tablet were so bad then you need something different. (Though you still should have given is longer just to be sure, I doubt a side effect can happen after one).

And just so you know, these things take time to buuild up in your system so expect no positive effect for 12 weeks.

What was your excuse for the days before that? Look, I really don't think this is for real, but on the off chance that it is, stop digging. If you turned up at a disciplinary with a bunch of pills you hadn't even taken and a note from AA (which they won't give you by the way - you do know what "anonymous" means!!!!????) I'd be tempted to sack you myself! If, and I'm really dubious, but if this is for real, then nothing you are suggesting saying here is believable. It is just screaming "I'll promise anything but won't be doing any of it". I can't really see that they'll do anything other than dismiss you, but if you are to stand any chance, you need to explain why you had the drink, you need to come completely clean about your addictions, you need to tell them that this had been a wake up call and that you will never do anything wrong again if they give you a second chance.

But they probably won't, and I'm going to tell you why - all those unacceptable one day absences. Because in hindsight, true or not, they are going to think exactly what I'm thinking right now. You were not ill. You were hung over.

So stop making excuses, stop making promises, and start being realistic about what you need to do. One meeting of AA and a bottle of pills you aren't taking won't convince anyone. If it takes sacking you to realise that you need to actually do more than promise, then maybe that is the best thing for you right now. Sometimes people have to have some awful impetus to change. Nothing else has convinced you in the past, has it? I hope this will. Because it isn't just about you - people who don't realise that going in to work drunk is wrong are a danger to themselves and too everyone around them, no matter where they work or what they do.

I didn't know that being intoxicated was gross misconduct.

There isn't a single job I know of where being drunk at work won't get you the sack on the spot.

Unfortuantely, this is for real. I've already had the investigatory meeting and I was completely honest with them about everything. I told them I was feeling anxious, panicked and needed to relax so I had the drink. However, I didn't expect them to notice (I've come to work most days after a few drinks and noone has ever said anything in 3 years). But I accidentally overdid it before the meeting and wasn't able to hide it like I usually can.

I've told them before that I drink too much, and they know about that. But I don't think they know exactly how serious my drinking is, and I will come clean about that tomorrow. I want to stop and will be attending an AA meeting tonight - they give you a 'starter pack' which I will be taking along with me tomorrow, and I will be attending the meeting completely sober which is a huge step for me.

It has been a wake up call, and I will accept the consequences if they decide to dismiss me but I hope they will show me some mercy because I have been a hard worker for them, and they do respect me. But I've been able to hide my excess drinking from them for a long time. And they know the sickness absences were hangovers.

I haven't hid anything from them apart from how excessive my drinking actually is, they know I have a problem already though.

So you were lying on here yesterday when you said that your previous absences were due to food poisoning, sickness, fainting and slipping on ice?

I've drank 13 shots of vodka before work every night (I work nights) for the past year. Before that I only drank about 7 shots for 2 years. But I haven't ever gone into work without a drink which is unbelievable, but true. I managed to hide it until last year when signs started to show, but because I was able to still work perfectly fine they didn't say anything. My job is very easy to do, I don't want to say what it is but it's a minimum wage kind of job.

    That's 13 x 25ml = 325ml - near enough half a bottle, and I somehow doubt you are actually measuring it.

If this is true then you're a full blown alcoholic and need to seek proper detox treatment. Going cold turkey would be highly dangerous.

No, just one of the 'sickness' absences were for a hangover. I only had one sickness absence last year due to drinking. But have had sickness absences the previous years due to it but I didn't mention them.
