Old credit card debt

I got a letter today regarding an old credit card which I had with Barclays around 10 years ago. It seems debt has been sold to Cabot financial. I don't see any black mark on my credit file, so I am surprised to receive this letter today. Can they still demand the payment? Do I need to reply to the letter? If I do contact them, will this cause any problem?

  • It depends on whether it's statute barred.

When did you last acknowledge it?
  • ...And when you say you see nothing on your credit file, have you checked against all three CRAs?

  • This is the first time I have received this letter in the last 10 years. I did move house a couple of times. I think this debt might be actually around 15 years old.

I have checked my credit report using Noddle, ClearScore and Experian. I don't see any report about this debt.
  • Assuming that you have not acknowledged the debt in some way over the years, and there is no CCJ against you for the debt, then the debt will be Statute Barred and unenforceable.

What does the letter actually say?

  • It basically says 'Our Summer Offer' and that I can save 50%. Offer is valid for 14 days. It mentions they can report to Experian, Equifax and Callcredit.

Like I said before, this is the first time I have received this letter. I have lived at my current address for the past 5 years.
  • Is it worth searching for CCJ using trustonline.org.uk website even though I don't see it in any of the credit reports from the companies I have mentioned above?

  • I did an online search and it seems there is no CCJ registered against me.

As you’ve been advised send a statute barred letter. They should go away

EDIT crossed with post from OP saying they would send the letter
