Laptop slow start up.

Options
I know this has probably been asked many times before but here I go.
From turning on the laptop it's about 6-8 mins before I can actually use it. Sometimes it takes longer. Is there a programme to download or some kind of software I could buy to rectify this. I am using a HP Pavilion Windows 10, not too sure of the model number.

Kind regards Jeff.

Its probably trying to download programs that can 'rectify' issues that is causing this.

Start by doing a disk clean up, delete temp files, cache etc etc.

Deactivate fast start up in windows 10 and see if its any better.

6-8 mins is LONG... lots of advice coming your way...
    0. do a chkdsk on C: just to check if your disk isn't knackered
** how much free space is on C: ? **
    1. which anti-virus do you use? if it's not Windows own, remove it
    2. have a look and disable startup programs under task manager; (while you're there, what's the last BIOS time?)

For starters anyway. Expect to see further suggestions to clean install, get an SSD etc etc. NB. need exact model number I'm afraid
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Installing a program is likely to have the opposite effect. Each program you load maybe loading itself at startup.

At first glance I'd say its just because you've a slow mechanical drive in the laptop. The laptop should have a label with the info:

    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03754824

But check the Task manager at startup.Check the "Process" tab and look for the column marked "DISK".

If that stays at 97%-100% for the 6-8 mins it's unresponsive then you might want to invest in an SSD instead of a mechanical drive.

If the laptop already has an SSD, then it might be a good idea to check what's running at startup and scan for ad/malware style programs.

Simply having a mechanical drive won't cause a boot time delay of the size reported.

I have seen this behavior with spinning drives with bad sectors or damaged boards.
If the laptop has got a hard drive light (very rare these days), I would check if it is steady on. If that's the case, either damaged drive (my vote) or a very very overloaded drive.

First and easiest thing to do is to download and run these two programs in order ..

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

That will rule out malware and PUP's hanging around .

Next is to check if your hard drive is approcing capacity, if it is then this will have a big speed impact.
Also, if it were me, i would go into control panel, programs and features, and remove the tens of useless programs that always seem to be included with HP laptops.

Once this is done - report back for further guidance

Where does it get stuck exactly? Is it after you type your password (if there is one) or is it even before the Welcome screen?
  • Thank you all so much for your useful information regarding this problem. My McAfee anti virus ran out a few weeks ago but the laptop keeps reminding me. The laptop is only 15 months old but it does have lots of photos on the hard drive.

I shall follow the info provided and hope there will be an improvement.

    Thanks again Jeff.
