I'm in college and work part time. Do I put student or employed on my credit application?

  • They definitely leave a footprint on your credit file. But only as quotation and not as a credit application.

What does FPA stand for please?...I did a quick google but couldn't find it....
Fraud prevention agency, ie the aforementioned NHunter.

Thanks. In that case I don't know. I would be surprised if there was a FPA check for a simple quotation though....

I wouldn't, having just read a couple of eligibility checker privacy policy statements.
  • Thanks for peeking my interest. I've only checked one site (MBNA) and it appears as though they do, in fact, check with FPAs as part of their legitimate interests to:
Investigate, detect, prevent and manage fraud and other financial crime

MBNA then go on to say:
We may use the information we have obtained from you, together with information we receive from third parties (for example credit reference agencies and fraud prevention agencies), to help us analyse our business, understand our customers and develop our products, services, website, credit risk and lending strategies, including things like what pricing you are eligible for, what credit limit you are eligible for, if you meet our card reissue criteria and any other circumstances we need to consider when making lending decisions.

I think you are supposed to put down that you are a student, as that is technically your 'full time employment' even though that makes you out to be a risk to lenders as their automated systems think that you have no form of income.

I used to put that I work part/full time depending on where I was working at the time I was making the application, even though I was at a point where I was studying and working full time

I’m a student and also self employed. I tend to put self employed on my applications unless its for a student account or similar
  • Personally if working part time, I'd put down employed/self-employed, unless the question stipulates "full time employment" or some such.

When I were a lad.... getting into university was seen as special. Only a small minority went to university. You were a good risk because by and large graduates walked into well paid jobs.

Nowadays, a much larger proportion of people go to university and many find getting a job tough. A pure guess: but I doubt whether CCs see being a student as good as it once was.

It may be that the OP is going to a top university (seen as special!) and has great career opportunities. Unfortunately the form won't distinguish that.

Just a bit confused on what to do put since I am both of them.

It's your full-time occupation which goes in the employment/occupation field and your part-time occupation/income goes in the additional/extra income field. For example I'm a pensioner and I get the old fogey's pension and I also get income from holiday lets. So therefore my occupation is "Retired" and my pension is my income while income from holiday lets is in the additional income field.
