Pay as you go - Call only
I need to get a simple pay as you go SIM for my son which allows just the calls (texts are ok too - but no data). Not keen on any contract etc. - just something I can top up with £10 and it has longest validity possible.
Big networks would be good, but won't mind looking at others too - EE is the only network (and any virtual one that uses EE) I want to avoid.
Any recommendations please?

I'm not sure that there is such a thing as "no data" sims nowadays.
Have a look at https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/best-pay-as-you-go-sim-cards/ and take your pick.0 -
Both O2 (Classic) and Three offer PAYG at 3p/min, 2p/text. Data is included, but on most phones you can turn off mobile data on the phone itself.
No bundles required, no expiry, you can top up on line, or with a voucher from a corner shop.0 -
Depending on child's age and "coolness" you could just buy him a basic cheapo phone, around a tenner.
I doubt they have any means to use data, mine doesn't, so regardless if sim will allow it or not the phone could not use it

One possible Cheap option would be £1 Vectone which gives 50 mins, 50 texts and 50 MB data (which is hardly any data you need worry about and as a pay as you go pack, you can not be charged over that). https://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/bundles/uk-plans . That is a monthly pack so would last you 10 months for £10. Although just read you do not want EE, and I believe Vectone runs on EE network.
If you are just looking at adding £10 and wanting that to last 1 year+ , with use to be just say the odd call every month, some type of emergency phone, then go with Three pay as you go (3-2-1 plan as already mentioned). Just turn the mobile data off on the phone option. Credit will last forever as long as make a call or text just under every 6 months or so.
If you want unlimited calls and no contract a month you can for £5 a month with either - Smarty (https://www.smarty.co.uk) (cheapest pack is £7.50 but if you turn data off on phone they will refund £2.50 back each month so only £5 a month) or CTRL Mobile (https://www.ctrlmobile.co.uk). Both on Three network.'Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway'

1pmobile.com - you can disable mobile data from the online portal.0

Ergo for just calls and texts sell the smart phone and use the proceeds to get a basic feature phone: Brands which come to mind are Doro and TTphone.
O2 PAYG is a 3p/2p/1p tariff and just make a chargeable event at least every 6 months to keep the credit.
Over the weekend I saw a Doro clamshell/flip phone in my local O2 shop for £32.99p PAYG but I don't remember the model. It interested me because I had never actually handled one before. It fit my hand rather nicely.0 -

Good call, I should have thought of that
I used to have a Nokia 5300 slider which was a fantastic little phone that I miss some times. The wife still has a Nokia 3220 which is in her bag switched off most of the time but still works fine and the battery just lasts forever.0
