Reduce outgoings. Look at finances. Contact creditors and arrange to pay them back.

£4K shouldn’t take too long to clear

Ok I have 1 card that's 2k.....if I offer them £20/month that will take me 8 years to clear and that's with no interest so not sure where your're coming from here

But you will care when the gas and electric company come to install pre-payment meters in your house It's not my house,
you want to move but no letting agency will rent to you because of your credit file, I won't want to move from here
you want to change your mobile phone contract but nobody will give you one,I won't want to change it (renew maybe yes but change no)

you want to change bank account but no bank is interested, I won't want to change banks

you go to insure your car and find you're getting higher quotes, Why?
you apply for a job where there's cash handling and the employer does a credit check. This will never happen as it's miles away from my line of work

  • Right, so you do have a job and run a car and a mobile phone. You won't be able to change your phone contract because that will probably be a credit agreement and you won't get any. Fuel for the car? Paid with what? Paying rent? Presumably, but what with. Are you affording these things without adding to your debt burden? I still don't believe a word of what you are saying. Sorry. Come back and let us know what happens.
  • Yes I am in full time employment with a family and run a car etc and I am up to date with all my bills that go with running a family house but I am starting to struggle with paying these credit cards and more so now because they have increased the minimum payment I need to make each month so I was simply asking what would happen if I stopped paying.......maybe I should have said what powers do they have to recover the debt if I refuse to pay.

What I was thinking is if I was to make contact and explain my situation and offer an amount lower than my min payment I will still run into all the above troubles as it will be reflected onto my credit file anyway so if that's going to happen I might as well not pay at all is that right
  • @ jonnyhatesjazz,

I just don't understand why you are not approaching a free debt counselling agency such as StepChange, for independent advice on how best to deal with your credit card debts.

I mean, what is the purpose of this thread, if you are not going to listen to any advice, as some posts have been constructive...
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

    Thank you

Just to clarify the purpose of this thread was to ask:
    'what would/could happen if I didn't pay'

I did not ask for any advice on what to do regarding my credit cards as I already know this but what would happen if I didn't pay i.e. what can they do to get me to pay and judging from the very few answers I got regarding my original question not very much!

Once they obtain a CCJ they can get an attachment to earnings order and recover money direct from your employer

This is not good news as I certainly wouldn't want them contacting my employer.

Thanks for informing me.......... this is a the type of answer I was looking for to my question even though it's not good :o

Post a SOA on the Debt-Free WannaBe board.

Cut your outgoings, reduce TV packages and phone packages etc and throw more money at the problems instead

Assuming you stop paying the Credit Cards. You would default, marked on your credit file for 6 years. It may get sold to a Debt Collection Agency, who after inundating you with letters that you ignore could apply for a CCJ before the 6 years is up, which goes on your credit file for another six years.

Maybe upto 12 years of bad credit doesn't bother you, but the CCJ can be enforced. Usually a bailiff will be employed, sure you can refuse to let them in, but a Warrant of Control isn't the only enforcement option. An Attachment of Earnings could be done, and whilst you can refuse to let any debt collector know where you work, refusing to tell the court is a lot more serious. So it could then be taken from your wages, or would you then stop working!
