My sister & I did 23 & me. Interestingly we only share under 60%. The report told me that there was a high chance that my second toe was longer & it is. Obviously this is a matter of supreme importance!! But it can also tell you many other (really) interesting things like cancer, dementia & even if you are likely to flush after drinking only a small amount of alcohol. So it does cost more than ancestry but also seems to give more info. My sister did both & said stick to the 23 & me & save my cash. At the time we did it the 23 & me was postage paid & the other wasn't so by the time you added postage on the difference wasn't so much.

I read the other day about a guy who submitted his dogs dna just to test the company and it came back advising who the dog was related to!

I don't believe that the major companies wouldn't spot non-human dna.
  • Thanks for all the replies peeps. The reason I’m considering it is just out of interest really. I’ve recently started to trace my family tree and have joined a family history group where a few of the members have done the test and found it useful in their research plus they have been put in touch with relatives they were unaware of and they have helped them in their research. I was also intrigued by the recent programme about the cast of Coronation Street who did this. Worth a watch if you’re into this sort of thng

They can be very useful in connecting you to potential relatives (who have also been tested), just ignore the made-up ethnicity stuff they use to sell them.

What happens to your DNA? Huge companies trading for decades/centuries can't keep our data safe. How on earth are these new companies supposed to guard against underhand acts.

Personally I would rather my credit card details were stolen than my DNA.

what happens if 'big brother ' are compiling a DNA database. This may not be a factor now but in the future we don't know how DNA will play a part in everyday life.

The delightful iPM programme on Radio 4 covered this only today.

And that was a chap who'd been conceived by sperm donation when these things were supposed to be completely confidential!
