Hello Peeps,
Quick question, has anyone done one of those DNA tests which tells you about your ancestry? I’m thinking of doing one to support my reasearch into my family tree.
I would like to hear from anyone who’s already done it and find a good company.
Thanks,
D

We've used https://www.familytreedna.com
As it's the only one we've used, it's hard to say whether it's the best.0 -
There's discussion about the subject here -

Doesn’t everyone come back with the same results half the time?
I saw an article where two brothers came back with entirely different ancestry (yes they were definitely full brothers) and two friends from
Different backgrounds getting some stupidly rare tribe in theirs.0 -
I did ancestry DNA - identified links to lots of cousins ( some quite distantly related) - been good fun and v interesting discovering the connections. It is a small world really - my son found a connection in Oz via a common ancestor of theirs from Wiltshire but we also worked out that I was connected to the chap via somebody who migrated from Wales.
Some people have a shock when they do the test and find that one side (usually the paternal) doesn't look like they expected0 -
OP What exactly are you looking for?
The DNA test isn't going to tell you your 4 x g father was Mr X.
Your chances of connecting with other people depends on how many other people have taken tests and uploaded their results.
Personally I think if you are happy with parting with your money to take the test then go ahead but don't expect miraculous results then you won't be disappointedIf you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
saw this the other day:

This might explain it..

I used AncestryDNA, and it came back surprisingly accurate, pinpointing my mother and father's genetic heritage which were very distinct from each other. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

In short: If you have any doubts, or mysteries, in your tree, then DNA can help you nail them soonest. More people every day are getting tested and any one of them could suddenly appear as a connection - a clue/lead from which you might be able to work out "the truth" or the "what happened to" questions that it might take 20 years/never to discover without it.
If you can afford it .... just do it. You never know what you'll dig up.
Which one is best to take is often discussed, so you'll find the answer in the discussions about that.
In short: If you can afford it - and want to fast-track your niggling queries or outright mysteries.... just get it done.
If you can't afford it .. carry on as you are until some future point when you can justify the cost....0 -
I read the other day about a guy who submitted his dogs dna just to test the company and it came back advising who the dog was related to!
I've heard of other tests being really generic. Some ancestors here, some there type thing. For these reasons I'd be a bit skeptical.0
