Two cables from satellite dish

Hello,

I have recently moved into a fairly new build flat. In the living room there are two cables coming in from a satellite dish outside. From what I've read elsewhere, the previous owners probably had them plugged into a sky box or something.

On top of that there are some of those built in to the wall tv ports but none of them seem to work in either the living room or bedroom.

I'm not interested in getting sky or virgin etc, I just want freeview regular channels on my tv and having an indoor aerial is a nightmare when the channels are constantly glitching. Is there any way to use these two cables to get freeview working in both living room and bedroom (both tvs are smart tvs)?

Thanks in advance!

No, via satellite dish the cable would be headed for freesat only.

Check if you tv's are compatible, some are. Otherwise you need a new tv, freesat box or an ariel!
  • What is the difference between freeview and freesat? How do I find out if my tv is compatible?

What is the difference between freeview and freesat?

Freeview comes via a transmitter on earth and an aerial connected to your tv.

Freesat comes from a satellite 36,786 km above the earth and is recieved using a satellite dish connected to a satellite box connected to your tv, unless you have a satellite receiver in your tv.

Google "is my HokeyCokey2000* freesat compatible"

Or go into the menus and see if there is a freesat option.

You can also buy freesat boxes with and without recording capability.

    * for the avoidance of doubt, replace HokeyCokey2000 with the name and model of your TV :D

Those tv sockets already in the wall - if you go into the loft you should see some cables laying around, look for round ones coloured usually either black, brown or white, they will be one these 3 colours, not flat ones which are the power cables.

The round cables with nothing on the ends are your arial cables which go to the sockets in the wall.

Buy a freeview arial and mount it somewhere in the loft and connect it to the loose cables, plug your tv in and tune it.
When tuned, select for example BBC1 and go and turn the arial until you have what looks like a perfect picture then secure the arial in that position.

If you now want to feed more than one of the tv sockets, buy a tv amp with multiple outputs for a few quid and plug more of the tv sockets into it.

WARNING - if you are not sure what are arial cables and which are power cables, get someone who knows to assist.

EDIT - just read your post and see that you are in a flat - suggest you ask either freeholder or manco about tv signal for freeview instead, but if the wall sockets have a tv point try plugging you tv arial cable into that and tuning your tv.

The OP is in a flat. Probably no access to a loft.

have you actually tried plugging your TV into one of the aerial sockets? when you do, you need to do a re tune of the TV so it can pick up the channels

Do you want to record stuff to watch later? If so get a Humax box like the 1100S, if not an old Sky box will do. Pay about £10 or less for the Sky box and £50 to £60 for the Humax box.

If you're looking for a Humax 1100s recordable box then I would go for a refurbished one from Humax. We paid £220 each for the two 1 TB new ones off Humax but the refurbished ones off Humax are app £160.

Especially if the new flat is served by a different transmitter from the old home
