Shsd

Options
First of all many thanks for the help the other day, currently busy cleaning up the laptop, so started looking around for new SSD, the thought came into my head how much would a 750gb be, and saw https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Solid-State-Hybrid-Drive/dp/B07F1SNSLL/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1536143961&sr=8-3&keywords=750gb+ssd"]this:

Now bearing in mind this is a money saving site, and laptop if for personal use only, not withstanding a very impatient pensioner, and the description says you get the start up speed of an SSD, which is the real problem, and for just a little more but less than an 500gb SSD, could get a 1tb SHSD providing my laptop could be upgraded from 750gb to 1tb.

Thoughts please. DG

Can't see the first link. Anyway, I would buy a good SSD drive (no hybrid), say 256 or 500GB, then if you still need storage space, use an external one.

Hybrid drives normally only use the solid state partition for Windows start up, that's where you will see an improvement compared to a traditional HDD.

On the other end, it's unlikely that you will see any difference while you use your computer or open new programs.

OP dont bother with a hybrid - just get the biggest SSD you can afford and suplement storage space with an external HDD or USB stick

The "SSD" bit is very small, and the spinning rust in the one you linked to only spins at 5400rpm - which is slow

Do you actually store that much on a laptop?

Clean install the OS to the SSD and put your old HDD in a £4 caddy for use as external storage.

I think you will find that the hard drive you are referring to is too big to fit into a laptop.

Aside from that, my old lenovo laptop came with a hybrid drive but I ended up replacing it with an ssd and a fresh install of Windows 10. I'm now selling the laptop and have just reinstalled the old hybrid drive and I've realised how much slower it is.

I have a hybrid drive on the laptop that I'm using to type this (a Samsung bought for me to work on 6 years ago), it's a bit faster than a machine with only a HDD but it's pretty slow compared to my personal Lenovo with a SSD. I'd absolutely agree with AndyPix's recommendation.

Right thanks folks, I tried looking at the technical comparisons which were totally above my head, just wanted a straight forward answer, so thanks for those, I will go back to plan a) a 500gb SSD with additional external storage. Yes I do have a lot of data, but they can be split into separate lots, Documents, Music (joys of retirement all music has been converted), videos, some the same, and photos (still loads to do), and Cross-stitch, Crocheting and Knitting Patterns. (yes everything is backed up at least twice!). Just have to decide if Samsung is worth the £20 more than the Crucial!, but hey they don't put pockets in Shrouds!
    Thanks again. DG

    How old is your laptop?
SanDisk SSD PLUS 480Gb is £68....
  • I'd use a pure SSD as the operating system drive, and any programs you use frequently. As mentioned by others, hybrid drives aren't really good these days - they were okay when SSDs were really expensive, but these days SSDs are quite cheap so hybrid drives have lost some of their lustre. I'd use the HDD that was originally in the laptop as a second drive; either put it in an external caddy, or if there is physically space within the laptop you may be to keep it internal (perhaps by sacrificing a CD drive or something).

Yes, in my opinion. Never had a Samsung fail, plenty of OCZ did, I would be surprised if they haven't given up making SSD drives yet.
Crucial are ok though, just a step below Samsung I would say.
That being said, 500GB is PLENTY for Windows and programs, unless you are moving/copying music and similar on a daily basis, you would probably be better off with a smaller SSD drive (256 maybe?).
