Lead time to reconnect a copper phone/broadband line?

I moved from Plusnet to Virgin Broadband last December, but will be moving away from Virgin when my contract ends in December as the connection has been so unreliable for most of the time that I've been with them. My question is: does anyone know what the usual lead time is for connecting an ADSL line when the line has been disconnected for 10-12 months?
Also, what sort of cost would I expect to incur for reconnecting the line?

Ask me on Saturday! and see how happy I am !

Some companies will do free connections.
Others can charge around £60 e.g Sky

The cost is the same as provisioning a new line, anything from £0 to 3130 depending on the provider and the value of the contract you are taking up. Typically 21 days lead time, depending on the area and OR workload. Since the BT service is completely separate from VM, you can overlap the two to avoid any downtime if you want to.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks for that. It sounds like I should give kick off the process a month before my contract end date, and give Virgin the same notice.

If you go part way though the signup process, you should be able to pick installation dates. This will give you an idea. Compare that to your commitments and pick a good day!

If you want to transfer your number you need to keep the VM phone running a little longer.

YOu want a bit of overlap on the BB, say a week.

VM cut my BB off 15 days early though! (heard this and TiVo cut off before).
I was impressed that they fixed it at 1:15am. :rotfl: I was expecting an automated service. But a nice man fixed it quickly

When you say "keep the VM phone number running a little longer" - how long would you suggest? I remember Virgin being absolutely clueless when it came to porting my number from my previous telecomms provider. The people that I dealt with did not know what the process was, or how long it should take.

I'm also a bit concerned (but not remotely surprised) that they disconnected your broadband early. How long did it take them to reinstate it?

I think/hope VM understand how to port their number away. I guess you pay more linerental for the privilidge

If you disconnect the vm line the number can't be ported so it needs to be live when the new contract starts.

Wish me luck. I'm going to need it

My BB was running again in 2 Mins

My VM cancellation is 20 Sept but landline told to be kept running.

I had nowTV BB install booked this afternoon from 1pm.
    (I'm busy next friday)

I got home at 12pm. VM phone line has no dial tone. (but makes touch tone noises).
My openreach line has a dial tone. (probably did a few days ago to be honest) and its even connected to my old VM number :)

Plugged in the NowTV router, and after a few minutes had an internet connection. :)

I now need to phone VM and cancel the line. This frightens me!
Don't want to do it too soon before 20th incase they sting me for exit fee's.
Don't want to leave too late incase I am tied into a 12month contract.

Exit fee's are cheaper. I guess I better try and ring them.
