Just out of guarantee

  • If its outside of its waranty the manufacturer won't (and isn't obliged to) do anything for you - set your sights on the retailer.
This is anytime after the purchase because the contact is between the consumer and the retailer, NOT the manufacturer!
  • Good news

Aye, but (and I can't remember the legal terminology for it) the manufacturer guarantee implicitly forms part of the contract. So a manufacturer can't just choose not to honour their guarantee later. However you have rights beyond the time of guarantee against the retailer.

Agreed, they don't alter your basic consumer rights which are with the retailer but any warranty/guarantee offered by the manufacturer is a legal contract (they can obviously set the terms to begin with) which they are then obliged to adhere to.

This isn't entirely true, in some cases the manufacturer will repair their goods even outside of the standard 12 month warrenty. A good example is Microsoft and the dreaded "Red Ring Of Death" on the Xbox 360, plenty of people have had repairs from Microsoft long after their 12month warrenty has expired.

They are rare exceptions where they are actively trying to prevent damaging PR. But it's true they're not obliged to do anything and it's completely at their discretion and under what conditions and terms their "extended" service covers.
