Does an employer have to pay a higher hourly if you work a Sunday or if normal rate allowed?

No, not unless your contract provides for additional payment xGone ... or have I?0

No. Employers do not have to pay a higher amount.
In fact, a few months ago I was in a Somerfield supermarket and the woman at the till was telling me how they were changing their contracts to REMOVE their extra Sunday payments that they had been getting.
There is no "automatic right" in any job for extra payments for any overtime - indeed, many people work extra hours "for free". It is all down to your personal contract of employment.0 -
and usually if you're part time you can't get an overtime rate till you've completed full time hours that week.
otherwise we'd all work 15 hours a week and get 25 more at overtime rates

Not always the case. At Boots (many years ago now), if you worked full time or part time you got double time on a Sunday. However, if you had a part time contract but your specified hours included a Sunday you got time and a half. But, if you were on a nil hours contract, you got double time on a Sunday, even if you had not worked any other hours that week! xGone ... or have I?0 -
I think I can have double time if I work after midnight, not that I ever would need to so that is a meaningless part of my contract.
It really isn't worth working all day Sunday for £50 as far as I can see.:beer:0 -

that's why I said 'usually'.
It is predominantly the case in the public sector (except the emergency services).:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A

Do you mean all day, or do you mean six/ eight hours?!
I used to love working Sundays, as I find them all a bit boring if I'm at home. Would rather work a Sunday than a Saturday (I rarely get dressed on a Saturday!) xGone ... or have I?0 -

Would look good on your CV/give you examples to use at interview as well as the cash.
And you'd be off your [STRIKE]spotty[/STRIKE] @rse and working.
I didn't get overtime for working Sundays at a hotel. Didn't stop me though - the tips were great on Sundays
In fact (and this was before minimum wage) it was £2.75 an hour and overtime was time and a half on Christmas Day and New Years Day. That was IT.
Guess what, I worked them both.

All day as in an 8 hour shift. To end up working a six day week for 50 quid seems a lot to ask.:beer:0 -
