Groupon took my money twice and say 'no refunds'

On 30th Aug I booked a trip to Thorpe Park for myself and my three children. It was a frustrating task getting the vouchers as the system was slow and my payments weren't going through. I kept with it but the system had taken my money twice. Instead of £160-, Groupon had taken £360-

I thought it would be a simple matter to explain and get the second payment refunded. It certainly was not. Groupon's view seems to be 'ha ha you paid twice, we're gonna keep your money!' The customer service representatives I spoke to were robotic and unhelpful and that's being nice about them. They are clearly only allowed to read a script at you, whether it is relevant or not.

If their booking system hadn't been so ludicrously slow this never would have happened. I didn't change my mind- somehow two payments went out. It is clear what happened, so why is it so difficult to get the duplicate payment refunded? Groupon will grab money any way they can- so far my impression of Groupon is that they are untrustworthy, deliberately obstructive and dishonourable. Emails are ignored. Customer service representatives do nothing. What can I do next?

  • How did you pay? If it is an unauthorised payment then the bank should be able to do a chargeback for you.
  • The bank referred me back to Groupon as I had actually paid it twice. They said Groupon would refund the second unwanted payment.
  • OK so next step is to go back to the bank and tell them Groupon refuse, the 2nd payment is unauthorised and could they please initiate a chargeback.
Either that or take Groupon to court.
  • Thank you Gary, I'm going to go back to the bank and do that. If I never have to contact Groupon again it will be a massive relief.
  • Lol no problem - to be fair my wife has had to use Groupon customer support in the past due to an issue with a product and they were quite helpful - perhaps you might have been unfortunate or it could be that their customer service has gone downhill recently.
  • How is £160 taken twice become £360? Shouldn't it be £320?
