Irrespective of that, isn't it a massive fine if you are found to have a car without a DPF. Doesn't sound like it's worth the risk. Diesel has had it's day now so probably better to get a Euro 6 petrol and not have to worry about driving too close to London or whatever else they come up with.

I would say its 1 chance in 10,000 you'd ever get "caught". The O/P didnt do it, has been driving the car anyway, so i'd drive on at it until it comes to the end of its life naturally.

Chances are the engine is running better without it anyway.

And most peoples lives dont revolve around having to drive in or around London, so unlikely to be an issue.

I still dont think they can even then start cutting the exhaust up to check it.

They don't need to, they merely need to put a measuring device on the exhaust and measure the amount of particulates that come out of it. One without a DPF filter in place will produce a hell of a lot more than one with one.

Its a visible smoke test. A car without a DPF can pass the visible smoke test, assuming its otherwise running fine.

Loving how the do gooders are effectively saying the O/P needs to either scrap his car and buy another one OR spend £,£££s sorting out a problem he didnt create.

I bet if the shoe was on their foot, they wouldnt be doing it.

+1 for sticking it in for an MOT and if it fails then evaluate the options.

To address a question that I have not seen answered, I doubt there is a market in old diesels being bought by people who want the scrappage discounts. When I looked into what to do with my old diesel, the scrappage schemes I investigated all said the car had to have been owned for a while (6 months+) by the person trading it in.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Thanks everyone for their replies and the healthy debate on this matter. I really didn't have any other option than put it through the MoT. But given some of the replies I had a bit more confidence that it might pass.

It did indeed pass, the tester did comment that the car was smelly, but passed the emissions test without any problems whatsoever - no visible smoke even under acceleration.

However, I am inclined to restore the DPF, the link in an earlier post to the cheap unit is appealing and something that I hadn't considered. The remap and reprogramming basically means that the fault diagnosis information isn't available which isn't a viable situation - I don't know whether this is always the case with remapped cars or just that whoever did the remap on my car messed up?

Shall I provide my registration number so you can all grass me up to the authorities?
  • A cheap DPF will strangle the exhaust and you'll get a performance and economy hit. The choice is yours but if you have an MoT, I'd leave alone if it were me.
