Buying a new laptop. Any recommendation?

Options
So unfortunately, my laptop for 3 years is not working anymore. According to the repair man I have to buy a new HD for my laptop since it's the one that's not working. They formatted it and ALL my files haven't backup SO... I lost ALL MY FILES and I still feel devastated.

I want to start fresh, by buying a new one where it could stay for me for more than 3 years. I'm not a techie girl that's why I feel that if I buy a new one by myself, somebody will scam me.

Anyway, HOPE SOMEBODY could help me. I'm not telling the budget yet cause I'm not in hurry and I could still save money for my new laptop.

Thank you in advance.

What is the model of your current laptop? As it's only 3 years old why not do as the repair guy suggested and buy a new hard drive for it. A SSD would be a good idea.
  • If buying new then a Chromebook might be good and make use of the cloud for your backups. Chrome books have less to go wrong.
For extra safety by a usb dongle to back up to as well.

Are you sure you’re not backed up in the cloud somewhere?

They shouldn't have formatted it without your approval....

the repairman should have software to recover deleted files. i would ask him to try and recover your files. as cisco001 said they shouldn't have formatted it without your consent

Easily avoided by backing up your data before disk failure happens, as it will do eventually.
No need to buy a new laptop if all that has failed is the hard drive.
OP, no one can advise you what to buy new without a) knowing your budget, and b) knowing what you need to do on your laptop.
It's as vague as saying 'I need a new car, what should i buy?'
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Only advice we can give is to back up regulary, and 2 back ups of everything. I have 2 USB memory sticks I back up onto (I should look into cloud storage I know...)

    Thank you in advance.

As aforementioned, you can buy a replacement for your hard drive, a super-fast solid state drive for your existing laptop for as little as £25.
For more details, you need to tell the brand and full model number of the laptop.

In addition, it still might be possible to retrieve some or all of your data, even if the drive has been formatted.
You firstly have to stop those 'cowboys' from doing anything else right now.

Defending the repair man who you are automatically assuming is a cowboy, whilst you can do that as soon as you mention the cost of doing it most people don't want to pay. They expect it to be done as part of the job and will gladly have you waste hours of your time for free but when you say it costs £30/hr or they can send it off to a data recovery company that'll charge £100s for 10/20/30GB recovery they don't want to know.
