ditching sky all together, what would be best?

I have had sky tv for years now, but these days I rarely watch TV I mostly watch catch up or netflix. I do record stuff but its shows on channels with catch up facility. I haggled down the cost last year and signed into a 12 month contract which is about to end. I do not have a TV aerial as it fell off the roof in a storm and I couldnt be bothered to get it replaced. I have a dish for the sky. I know I can watch some channels on sky without a subscription but I don't think channels such as Dave are free on sky? Would getting a freesat receiver be worth it compared to freesat on sky?

I got rid of sky a while back and I'm glad I did. I record a lot of tv 'live' so I got a Humax Freesat box, whilst its a high initial outlay, for me it was worthwhile.
I then spoke to a friend who had Netflix, bought NowTV for myself and we swapped logins so we both have access to each others, so a huge amount of on-demand shows, programs etc at a fraction of the cost.
With NowTV you can find a lot of vouchers online, and then when you cancel they offer you x months at 1/2 price, so you save lots, especially compared to Sky!
  • Agree with #2, although I got a freeview recording box (Youview) when I was with PlusNet. Now TV is a good cheaper alternative to Sky. As you don't have an aerial, a decent freesat box should do you, and Humax have a good reputation.

After ditching Sky, I got out our Humax , but never set it up, as most main channel items appear on catchup. After our tv lost two catchup channels,I bought an Amazon Fire stick and found it had catchup for other channels like Dave .

I know have Prime membership, which for £59 for a year gives access to films, music on demand, games, books to read and different tv programmes ie under £5 a month.

Dave is on Freesat from Sky, channel 111, freesat channel 157.
If you want to check what channels are free to air, just pull the viewing card. However, without an active subscription, you will not be able to record or view existing recordings.
The channel line up vs Freesat is very similar.

I’ve been with Sky for over 20 years. Ditched sport last year and haven’t regretted it. I sometimes watch Sky Atlantic but really it was the movies I was after. Over the past 6 months or so, the new Sky movies selections have been dire.
A couple of examples are Paddington2 and The Post being on Prime and not on Sky.
I have no problem ditching this now and getting Now TV but will miss two things...

I like the films that I do watch to be in UHD. I know Netflix & Prime are available but does Now TV stream in UHD?

Also, I’m in the minority that actually likes watching 3D. Does anyone other than Sky offer 3D?

Thanks for your help on these questions..

Do you still actually have a TV that supports 3D?

Even if you have, no new TV set has the functionality any more and so it will shortly no longer be available to anyone. Even Sky's offering has long since been relegated from being a fully broadcast channel. As demand will continue to decline, it'll die a slow and quiet death.

UHD is not available from NOW TV, it doesn't even offer Sky subscription channels in HD!

That's the reason it's so much cheaper. ;)

Hmmm - this has me thinking; I rarely watch TV "live", as I always record to watch later, or at least skip over the ads.

Best way to watch TV & live life, without the plug-in-drug that is TV, ruling you...
