DFS Sofa

Options
Earlier this year, I bought a sofa from groupon. It gave measurements but not the height of the seat. When it arrived it was only 16 inches off the floor and as a disabled person with arthritis, I just couldn't get up and down off it. They were very good and took it back and refunded my money.
I chose a sofa from DFS website. It had a seat height of 20.5 inches in the diagram, but it did say approximate. I phoned the adviser and told her about the previous experience and that I needed the height to be as close to 20.5 as possible because of getting up and down off it and she categorically assured me it would be.
So it arrived and is very nice, but yet again I struggled to get up and down off it so when my son came round, he measured it and it is 16.5 inches. I have phoned DFS and she said that the measurement was approximate and I told her if they listened to the phone call the adviser assured me it would be lose to 20.5 inches. Someone was meant to phone me back today but didn't. Do I have any rights? Surely approximate doesn't mean it can be 4 inches shorter than in their diagram? I would be happy if they could just put some higher feet on it for me. I am now stuck with a sofa I am paying monthly for that I can't use.

  • Is the first purchase and return in anyway related to the second?

Do you have any evidence to show you asked for/the sales person assured you the item was the specific height?
  • The two purchases were not related. When I phoned it did say that the call was recorded but other than that I have no proof although it does give the dimensions on their website as 20.5 inches seat height.
  • I paid an extra eighty pounds to have the seat cushions filled with a foam that would not sink and would bounce back into shape which the adviser recommended due to my disability.
  • Sorry I can't open the link, I'm not in the UK at the moment and am guessing that may be the issue (my tech not yours).

How long ago was the item delivered and how did you pay?
  • I won't post the whole webpage but this is the important bit:
(Click on it and it will show full size)

Their dimensions might be approximate, but 4 inches is a HUGE discrepancy in height!!

That sounds more like a mistake on the website!

Did you go into store and sit on a measure any sofas? Or did you base your purchase purely on the dimensions specified online?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • I didn't go into the shop. I have mobility problems and wouldn't have been able to walk around their showroom, I based my purchase purely on the website details and speaking to the adviser. I am paying monthly on 2 years interest free credit.

I would certainly kick up a fuss. Approximately 20.5 inches is NOT 16.5 inches!!!!

Make sure you have saved a copy of that webpage as this looks like an error.

Both of mine are 16.5 inches (one M&S the other an ancient leather one) so I think perhaps it is a standard height?

As you relied totally on the website data which is clearly wrong then you should push for a refund.

You would be better off buying from a company that specifically sells products for those with mobility issues.

Edit: or sofas for tall people
https://www.theloungeco.com/sofa-to-suit/long-legs/ (Just an example. No idea who this company are but it is 21" high)

Could you make the legs 4 inches higher???

  • I am going to ask DFS to make the legs an extra 4 inches higher. I wouldn't know where to start to try to do it myself. Ill let you know the outcome. Thanks for everyone for your advice.
