Tenancy Renewal Refusal Due to Children

I have been researching the issue of a landlord not renewing a tenancy because they no longer want children in the flat. From my understanding evictions aren't allowed on the basis of children in the flat but I can't seem to find anything about discrimination when a contract is at an end.

I guess our situation isn't completely clear cut but generally speaking can a landlord refuse to renew a tenancy because children live there?

    Do you mean the fixed term period has ended? It doesn't mean you need to leave, just that it becomes a periodic tenancy (usually month by month). If the landlord really doesn't want you to stay then they can issue a section 21, which they can do for any reason.

    UNLESS the child is less than 6 months old; where such a statement would indeed be discriminatory.

    Otherwise that’s legitimate.
  • Don't bother to renew, simply continue as periodic.

    Not enough information, but if

    * England/Wales
    * AST
    * approaching end of fixed term

    the LL can serve a S21 Notice (2 months to expire at or after end of fixed term) and then evict via the courts. As no reason is needed the question of children does not arise.

    I'm not sure the age of the child has any bearing on his or her legitimacy.........
