Most families get up early around 6.30 am and have lots of appliances on and showers for a couple of hours within in the cheap rate time up to around 8.30 am in BST .Some users could easily get away with low rates of 5% but others are using much more. You would be surprised at the wastage of power with things on standby , monitors left on all night, fridges freezers etc
I had a period of checking total usage of new eco 7 meters in areas with gas and electric combined because i thought the DNO s were fitting these unsuitable meters and occupiers were losing out and my figures seemed to be around the 15 % mark low rate usage for the average family. I used 10% in my test and Eco 7 came out the cheapest
All true users of NSH used more kwh in the low period than normal. At a guess I d say 60% low rate use was typical
Many occupiers are indeed losing out if they simply stick to the big 6 on standard tariffs and would be better off with single rate if they don`t shop around and compare with the best rates available for Eco 7
Areas like Peterborough , Mansfield,Worksop I have worked , and places near large power stations traditionally had many Eco 7 s installed whether gas was used or not . I presume it was to encourage low rate usage to keep the power stations busy at night

i just spoke to SSe and i have more info:

my tariff = Standard economy 7, Evergreen
    Day energy 20.75p - night energy 10.75p
    standing charge 30.17p per dsy

    pay monthly by DD

move in day readings: 9/7/18 =
    8545
    9061

    last readings i gave 17/8/18 =
    8706
    9076

SSe said based on my readings, i use:
15 units at night (this figure will be lower , now i switch the water tank off)
    161 units in the day

so my monthly bill will be £38 p/month

as i wont be using the storage heater to warm my rooms in the winter (ive always just used my dyson hot+cool electric heater) i said wouldnt i be better off with a standard meter instead of the e7, after she spoke to a colleague she said they wouldnt change the e7 meter

but a guy i spoke to at sse last week advised me to switch meters as i dont use electricity at night!

    thank you

I think you have misheard or are mis-quoting the lady.

You used 15 (night) units in that period and 161 (day) not per day. But the result is the same - a very low usage.

Your method of heating by aa Dyson would not suit everyone 0 but if it works for you stick with it.

Houbara suggestion of sticking with E7 remains good.

    But do change supplier
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
