Travel websites do no specify type of economy seats

    Asked if I could cancel but they told me it was a non refundable trip as the hotel and tickets have already been issued.

    So what did Expedia say when you said you had a screenshot of your classic booking?

    They told me to email them the screenshot which I have already done.

    When I called customer support I got the feeling the guy I was talking to had absolutely no authority to actually do anything.

    That can be a problem with Expedia. They are generally considered a reputable agent but they are now such a huge organisation that much of the customer service is now outsourced, more often than not its script based and they can’t do anything complicated. The “we will escalate and call you back” line is often used.

    Keep on at them. When you get someone who has the knowledge and authority they are pretty good at resolving issues. As a thought, does your itinerary/confirmation break down the charges to show that you paid for Economy Classic?
