how long should you expect to wait for a response to an offer?

Home is in a lovely area, their neighbours sold very quickly last week or so ago. We viewed the house and put an offer in 10K over the Home Report value (we really want it and believe its worth it) also our solicitor found out that after only one day on the market the home had 3 other notes of interest.

We put the offer in only just yesterday morning, however it feels like a life time already, every-time the phone rings my heart drops!!

Sellers - If you sold your house, how quickly did you accept the offer?
Buyers - how long would you wait for a response??

At this point no news is good news but i just want to know now :rotfl:

If it's got that much interest then it's probably going to go to a closing date. Did they tell your solicitor they were willing to consider an offer despite the other notes of interest?

The EA said to our solicitor that they would put the offer to the seller and come back with an answer, we didn't manage to speak with our solicitor today, although i would imagine if he had heard he would have been in touch with us... will get in touch and ask for an update tomorrow - hope it doesn't go to a closing date but would like to know soon if that's the case...

I am hoping they just taking their time to consider it....

As a vendor I'd be in no immediate rush if there's that level of interest in the property.

Often you get a "no" almost immediately. Many sellers take the view that the first offer is never the best one.

Other times it can take a few weeks. People often want to leave their house on the market for a few weeks to get a feel for the market and see what offers they get.

I understand that some buyers play around with offering under or low to begin with but we wanted them to know we were serious...

We won’t be leaving our offer a few weeks, though. we have to decide soon if we wish to continue with a purchase of a new build (soon to be released for sale) and if this house doesn’t go through that’s our option... I also know they have to sell to buy a new build so they won’t be in a position to wait weeks as they have to sign missives.

Your username and comment indicate you are in scotland which is a different system. In england, when you make an offer, it is open for you to make the offer open for a period of time

Every offer in Scotland has a time limit on it. Though largely meaningless given the other conditionality and negotiations which would be done even if it is "accepted".

Suspect they're preoccupied with other more pressing rhetorical questions such as 'is it half empty or half full?', 'is the grass really greener on the other side?', and 'how long is a piece of string...?'

As a FTB I’m not sure of the usual buying/ selling etiquette :-)

I had an agent who never got back to me about my offer. A week later I saw it was sold, so contacted them. He said the vendor decided they would only sell to a family and he thought he had left a message. I'm in a popular area and basically agents treat you like you're second class. So it just depends where you are and how keen the agents are. I'm not even getting asked for feedback after viewings!
