Metabo's my choice, first the 18v LXT combi drill as I was advised that batteries would always be available, and that the gearbox gears were metal not plastic. Then bought their 10.8v combi drill and hardly use the 18v any more as the 10.8 is light and easy to use but has enough power for just about anything I've needed to do! even bought a 10.8v for my SIL for his birthday this year (he aslo has an 18v Makita) which he loves - and our daughter can use it! I now have a 10.8v sabre saw which takes the same batteries as the drill, and have just taken delivery of an 18v LXT multitool that takes the same batteries as the 18v combi drill!0

I have a dewalt as it was on offer last year in Screwfix. it is by far the best cordless I have ever had, I have had cheap ones and the batteries usually give up and impossible to find replacements.0

I've got some Ryobi tools from the Ryobi One range which you can swap batteries between tools and buy other tools without batteries which might be worth considering if he is likely to want any other tools in future. I've got a few of their tools now and have been really happy with them.0
