The machine you used might not even offer cash withdrawals. I've used specialised machines for deposits in branch and they don't need you to enter your PIN.

In contrast, standard ATMs ask you to enter your PIN before presenting you with a list of services. I've used those on several occasions in the past to pay in a cheque. Nowadays I just use my smartphone.

The machines I used were inside the branch and did offer cash withdrawals.

The loud beeping noise the machine makes during and after making the deposit kinda makes you look at the screen...

Not everyone can hear them though. My husband is partially deaf and wouldn't hear the beeping of a cash machine - he can't hear the smoke alarm or car alarm as it's to do with the tone rather than volume.

I've used those type of machines too. As you can no doubt tell, machines differ in terms of the services they offer and how they are accessed.

Earlier this week, I deposited a cheque into my account through the atm.
The procedure is, that you put your card in, put your pin in, then choose deposit money. Then an envelope comes out of the slot next to the machine, you put your deposit in the envelope, then post it back through the slot.
As soon as it is put in the slot, you receive a reciept. Then you get message on the screen asking if you want to perform another transaction, or have card back.
Stupidly I walked away from the machine without getting my card back.
I phoned the bank when I realised I had done this to cancel my card.
Checking online banking later I discovered someone had taken the opportunity to withdraw £100 from my account
I then phoned my bank again and got this marked as a fraud, and money was refunded the same day::T
So a commendation to Nationwide (who were very friendly and helpful at the call centre) for refunding my money so quickly, when it was my stupidity for leaving the card in the machine.
And a warning to others who may deposit money in this way, make sure you get your card back:doh:
Normally, when using an atm to withdraw money, you get your card back before you get receipt and money out, so if like me you very rarely deposit money in this way, then it is an easy mistake to make.

That was lucky. Fair play to them.

The in-branch Nationwide machines usually give you the option to deposit (only) without entering a pin...
