Earlier this week, I deposited a cheque into my account through the atm.
The procedure is, that you put your card in, put your pin in, then choose deposit money. Then an envelope comes out of the slot next to the machine, you put your deposit in the envelope, then post it back through the slot.
As soon as it is put in the slot, you receive a reciept. Then you get message on the screen asking if you want to perform another transaction, or have card back.
Stupidly I walked away from the machine without getting my card back.
I phoned the bank when I realised I had done this to cancel my card.
Checking online banking later I discovered someone had taken the opportunity to withdraw £100 from my account
I then phoned my bank again and got this marked as a fraud, and money was refunded the same day::T
So a commendation to Nationwide (who were very friendly and helpful at the call centre) for refunding my money so quickly, when it was my stupidity for leaving the card in the machine.
And a warning to others who may deposit money in this way, make sure you get your card back:doh:
Normally, when using an atm to withdraw money, you get your card back before you get receipt and money out, so if like me you very rarely deposit money in this way, then it is an easy mistake to make.

It's nice to see some positive feedback here - most of the time people only moan. Glad you could resolve the matter and haven't lost any money. I bet you'll remember this episode for a long time
BTW, Nationwide are not a Bank, but a Building Society.0 -
Thanks, yes I know Nationwide are a building society, should have put that as the title of my message!0

The loud beeping noise the machine makes during and after making the deposit kinda makes you look at the screen...0

I was on a busy high street so heard no bleeping.
As I said it was a result of my own stupidity.0 -
Seems mighty generous to me.
Was there only £100 in your ac?
Inconvenient as it may be, why don't ATMs ask for the pin again for a follow on withdrawal? It'd usually protect against people leaving logged in cards in the machine?0 -
I did have more than £100 in my account, maybe the thief thought they would be less likely to get away with withdrawing more?
I agree with you about having a requirement to enter pin in again.0 -

I've only ever put a couple of cheques into the cash machines in a Nationwide branch. I don't ever remember being asked to put in a pin to deposit funds into an account.0

The machines outside the branch operate differently from some of those inside0

In contrast, standard ATMs ask you to enter your PIN before presenting you with a list of services. I've used those on several occasions in the past to pay in a cheque. Nowadays I just use my smartphone.0
