Help please, I'm looking for wide shoes.

Hiya everyone. I'm looking for some work shoes that I can wear on the shop floor (I work mostly on the food section in M&S) so ideally they need to have a bit of a grip on them. I usually get my shoes from M&S or Evans as I need a wide fitting but I haven't seen anything suitable in months and the only pair I have now for work are falling apart.

I did get a pair from TKMaxx about 3 years ago and wear them most days, they were so comfy but they are falling apart now. They only cost £20, they were Kickers. I know if I can't find any shoes anywhere I can get a pair that haven't been discounted for about £60 but I really don't want to spend that amount on work shoes.

I have been going into TKMaxx for the last few months but had no luck.

Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA.

I work in the cafe at m&s and i wear black trainers. My feet used to ache after a day at work so now it is cheap trainers.

I would see if you are allowed to wear them.

Do you have a TJ Hughes anywhere near you - they quite often have wider fittings in, for around the £20 mark? there's a storefinder on here. http://www.uk-highstreet.org.uk/tj_hughes.php

also what about some of the mail order sites - there are ones for older people which are in the "comfy but old fashioned" bracket - not what you'd wear for a night out, but might be ok for work? This one's just an example, you might be able to google something nicer?

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I have exactly the same problem, gave up and spent £50 on some clarks ones. They are incredibly comfy though.

I've found Hush Puppies are at least as comfy as Kickers (I have v wide feet too - almost square lol) and you can usually pick up smartish black ones at places like Brantano for cheaper than the high street (TK Maxx sometimes too).

Possibly of no use to the OP but for those of us with wide feet, New Look now do a range of wider fitting shoes.
  • Wide feet are a pain. I went to clarks to get a proper fitting only to be told I would be a G if I had size 5 feet. Well Im technically a 3!. I where size 4 boots day to day as they are the comfiest. New Look wide fit shoes are good but mine did take a bit of wearing in. I try to only wear shoes for evenings.

I havent personally tried them but Ideal World on TV do a range called Flyflots that do wide fittings. They are a little expensive and not the most glamourous but for work I am tempted.

    You could try here:

I've used them to purchase Clarks shoes and they're great.
  • I bought these in black for my wide feet:

from J D Williams and used the UHCG5 code for 20% off. (Have just found out that this code is now out of date but you may be able to find another one.) Total cost was £9.99 and they are soooooooo comfortable. They don't look particularly feminine but they're fine with black trousers. Comfort is very important for me because I walk one mile to and from work each day and am on my feet all day long. I initially ordered the EEE fitting but had to exchange them for the E fitting - PERFECT :)

I must admit I buy nearly all my footwear from Evans - reasonably fashionable and nice and wide.
I know what you mean about the prices though - but they usually have some reductions going. I buy in bulk ( pardon the pun) in the sales at the end of each season - so I have all my summer footwear already sorted for next year. It doesn't matter that it won't be the 'latest fashion', as at my age comfort is just as important. Most of my footwear cost £10 or less - but as say, I usually only buy during the sales, I cannot afford full price.
I would check up on what your M&S colleague said about trainers - especially if you wear trousers as your uniform - what does it matter what you have on your feet ?, the important point is are you comfortable, and are they safe in your workplace ?

Have you thought about fleabay ? If you do a search for evans, and your shoe size, and then even within say 10miles of your post code you could always see/try before you bid. Not done it myself yet, but I have seen quite a few bits of Evans clothing/shoes on there.;)
    Good luck:o

Thanks for all your replies everyone, there are so many great suggestions. I'm going to try and get up earlyish so I can have a look in town before it gets busy, I hate Saturday shopping but it is my only day off this week and the shoes I wear now are embarrassing as they have developed holes in each foot.
I forgot to mention in my original post that I am a size 8 which makes it harder to find decent womens wide shoes and a lot of the time the wide fittings they have in some shops aren't wide enough which is what has put me off ordering online as I like to try on before I buy.
Comfort is my priority as sometimes I can be on my feet for up to 10 hours (this week I did a 12 hour shift in which I was standing for the majority of it).
I used to wear a pair of flat ankle boots a few years ago before they wore out. Think they were from Evans.
A new uniform policy came out which specifically says no trainers, I think that is a bit more lenient on Foods or the Cafe though.
