should i be changing my broadband provider every so often so I can get cheaper deals like I do my elec and gas provider? I have the idea that they will need to install new landline connecin eveytime. I do try to renegotiate a better price on contract (currently plusnet) but its never as good as for new customers....

Think youve answered your own question there. Providing of course competitors can offer new customer prices that are cheaper than plusnets existing customer price.

so if other providers do have cheaper options should I do it? is it as easy as chaning gas ans elec suppliers? Will they need to put in a new port?

its not quite as easy and elec and gas.

Because

1) You need to remind them to transfer your number.
2) they post you out a new router, and you pay postage.
3) you are likely to be without broadband (maybe a few hours, maybe more)
4) usually you can't choose the switch over date

when you look at offers, take a note of the price after 12/18 months. It could be ~£35 (that could be more than you pay now? in which case you may need to change again)
doing a deal with your existing supplier is normally a good way forward.

You shouldn't need a new port, but often engineers need to connect things in the exchange (or the road). Most suppliers can charge a lot for this bit! I guess its to put you off switching!
