Earplugs

Hi
A bit of a silly question, please don’t laugh.
However the more I think about it, the more I worry about it.

I will soon be travelling from Manchester Airport to USA, and I want to know if I can carry on board a pack of earplugs with me, also put them in my normal luggage.

These are the soft foamy disposable type. I need near absolute silence in order to get a good nights sleep especially on the plane on the way back.

So there will be a bag of them at least a weeks worth.

Trouble is not that I have anything to do with illegal substances. But it would be rather embarrassing if I get pulled out of the queue, at either side for something looking suspicious in my bag – either carry on or hold luggage.

Does anyone else, carry such items to and from Manchester.

I have taken such items away with me before – but I cant remember if I have taken them on the plane or put them in my luggage.

Regards

You will have no problem whatsoever taking your earplugs in your hand luggage.

I've tried using them on planes and they didn't work as well as I'd hoped. Certainly nowhere near perfect silence.

  • I bought a pack of earplugs from screwfix to use on flights to New Zealand & Australia.

Combined with an eye mask & some herbal sleeping tablets bought from Tesco I slept like a baby.

I also tend to find industrial type ones are great. I use Howard Leight ones that they use in factories, buy them very cheaply from eBay. Disclaimer is I’ve never tried them on flights, it’s not the noise I find a problem, it’s getting comfortable enough to sleep!

I’ve never had much benefit from earplugs. Noise cancelling headphones are a much better option but are expensive and can be restrictive with regards to sleeping positions.

Some ear plugs work better than others -- the higher the dB number, the better. The 39 dB ones are pretty close to complete silence.

I use the Hearos extreme earplugs 33db. Comfortable and can’t hear very much at all when wearing them.

I do prefer noise cancelling headphones on flights tho..

I don't use those 'foam' earplugs. The only ones that work for me are the wax earplugs from Boots, highly mouldable.
