Can I uninstall Windows update?

I received this update on the 22nd August..

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4100347/intel-microcode-updates-for-windows-10-version-1803-and-windows-server

...which appears to have slowed down my pc.

Can I uninstall it without messing up my computer?

Thank you.

You can but the way Windows 10 updates means it will just reinstall itself again.

Go into Start -> Settings -> Update and Security -> View Update History -> Uninstall Updates.

You really don't want to remove this. It fixes a major security flaw in your CPU. Always install whatever updates there are for your machine so it is a secure as possible.

Thanks for replies. So if I shouldn't uninstall it, is there anything I can do to speed up my pc again?
Forgot to mention too I have CCleaner and that's stopped working after the update - will analyze but won't remove.
    Thank you.
PS. Not sure if this is relevant, but the first install of this update failed, but the second one was successful.

If the slowdown was caused by this update probably not.

CCleaner isn't that useful really. All the actual useful functions can be carried out by the native tools in Windows. Just get rid of it.

Unfortunately many (most?) consumer CPUs are affected by these vulnerabilities. The only way to mitigate against them is to install the microcode which disables certain features of the CPU, slowing it down.

The only alternative is to buy a new CPU which isn't affected by these problems (and, as far as I know, affected CPUs are still being sold).
  • Again, thanks for replies.
This is the first time I've experienced this kind of problem after a Windows update, so just wondering if a further update may follow to mitigate problems caused.
Is it naive of me to think that the updates Windows provides are meant to enhance your pc's operation, not slow everything down to a trickle?

In fairness its a unique update, its not like your processor code gets updated every day. Its just documented that on older computers the effect is more severely felt a result of the update, but it is what it is unfortunately.

Only had it since January 2017.

Well with all due respect maybe you should have mentioned that in the original post. My Intel laptop dates from 2011, has received this update and is now no slower than it was before. But then it does have an SSD not a normal hard drive. That may be an upgrade route to explore.
